Reasons why Farmers want Moles controlled
moley replied to heart of wales's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Given free rein on a meadow in spring, a heavy infestation will bury half the available grazing. This is the time that they do most damage. i had a local contractor wanting to pay me to trap moles on all of his customers field as it cost him a fortune in replacing blades , the blades lasted about 7 times longer on clean fields ,and he had it worked out it would be cheaper to get me in -
ive still got that day to come.. hopefully, now that would be a buzz. you can get doubles at anytime of year , but now and april is the best time as its breeding season, they have love on thier minds and the males are travelling , good luck richie , you,ll get them

moley replied to a topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
some good sound advise there -
i CAN HONESTLY SAY I HAVE NEVER YET FOUND ONE AFTER BROCK HAS TAKEN THEM, I ALWAYS JOKE WITH THE CUSTOMERS THAT IF YOU OPENED UP A BADGER SET YOU WOULD FIND MOLE TRAPS ON THE MANTLE PIECE AS ORNAMENTS. oops sorry about the shouting, cant be arsed to retype. i reckon it used to cost me about 200-300 quid a year to bloody badgers what with lost traps and the price of the mole that was in it , sometimes you found the trap not faraway , but most times it was gone

From what I can see it may not have been taken in the spirit it was intended. And I apologise, it was 4 posts deleted not 3. You're a veteran member of the forum, Moley. You're well respected and dare I say you may intimidate people to a degree where they aren't comfortable approaching the problem with you. With all the grief that's effected other forums, here, it's totally understandable that people don't want to stick there necks out. Those that don't mind sticking their necks out are called moderators! i don,t think i,m intimidating at all , i am very approachable ( honest) , i sp

i dye alot of my traps , but never waxed them , a decent coat of spay paint can do a good job too , but the usa trap dye is designed for the job and seems to pit into the rust and stay there, never liked to use rusty traps at all , far too slow and noisey i always found the black trap dye was a bit too black

MOLEY , WHEN YOU USED THE PIKE TRACE WIRE ..... WAS IT A SINGLE STRAND OR SPUN ? DID YOU SPIN IN ANY BRASS ETC ? ALL THE BEST DUCKWING it was 7 strands spun used it as it came off the spool and i used it without any brass , the heavier stuff is difficult to get now , plenty about with a plastic coating , but thats no good, never tried it for owt but squirrels and a few rats, the stoat was an incidental , i talked to p@g about it and he swore by 4 strand brass but said he got a % of breakages ,i never got a breakage when the catches were hung off the p
-
i use pike trace wire when i can get hold of the stronger stuff ,drennan 7 strand in 50 or 64 lb breaking strain , anything less just isn,t strong enuff , no good for anything but poles or somewhere the caught animal can fall off, works for rats ,squirrels , had a stoat once , tried it for rats once just pegged like a rabbit snare and it broke
-
i have bin known to catch 1 or 2 :secret:
-
duffus type for me every time ,i use to use nothing but scissor until i learned the hard way, i have tried every trap on the market , even american gopher traps and while some were very good i still go back to the duffus or half barrel for all mole trapping , talpex are a good trap too in certain situations
-
not going down that road again , i use what i like and bugger what anyone else thinks
