  1. Trammels have been around for a long time, you are right, but at present they are the latest 'must have' - how often were trammels mentioned a couple of years ago? My point is that as a newcomer to netting he should concentrate on where, when and how to net. As you say, trammels are a handy tool (but definitely not guaranteed to hold a rabbit as thought by some) but so are 'normal' nets too. As with all nets they will catch if used in the right hands! Yes, all topics go round in circles, I'm just waiting for 'Ferreting Flares' to come back in as the latest fad without being argumen
  2. yip , i was meaning the duffus type, i sent loads of half barrels out to a guy in washington , he now uses them all the time for moles and no longer uses the out o sight , he catches a good few incidental gophers aswell , just tought they might be worth a try
  3. If your really into mole trapping then you should deffo get moley,s vid on the subject...if for nothing else other than to see him sat at the table with "those" gloves on nothing wrong with the smell of latex
  4. exellent , nice to see how stuffs done over the pond couple of questions , are gophers solitary and have thier own territories or do they live in communal colonies ? do you catch them in half barrels ?
  5. i couldn,t stand the squealing thru summer so i get all mine castrated
  6. Moley, just out of intrest how many meshes deep are the inner walls on your trammels? 15 meshes deep , these are bought nets as i,m not a netmaker and i assume they are from sheet netting , i have only ever made one long net ,a few stop nets and a few hundred purse nets , so i,m certainly not pro at rigging up nets , i am however a user of nets most days of the week and you get to know what is required as lost rabbits mean more effort in future these trammels are not the be all ,end all of nets , i use them for a reason , not to be awkward , rabbits do bounce of em , same as most nets
  7. i have always worn rubber work gloves for my trapping , it saves your hands from getting cold ,dry and cracked
  8. the fun stuff !! you want to try being out in the countryside , setting traps and snares and working your dogs and ferrets all week, bit of shooting thrown in , fresh air , nice smells , no one to bother you, laid out on the grass eating your cheese sandwiches bloody hard work , i,ll tell ya
  9. whats an allrounder ?, lamping , ferreting , deer, fox ,hare , rabbit ,rat ,day and night longnets , bushing , coursing , guarding , marking , does a dog that can do all this exist ?
  10. i didn,t like them even nicking my moles cos i was on per head and couldn,t charge for no carcase , never trapped the fencelines much , to many stones roots etc
  11. i no longer trap moles , but i have bin know to catch an odd one , i used 3" of blue water pipe on top of a 12"dowel , then put a wrap of white insulation tape around the top , its amazing how easy that little bit of white can be seen when you are looking for it , all traps were marked on a small map in a book and placed in a plastic bag ,6 traps in the front box (quadbike), set traps , mark in book , do next 6 ,etc , etc , i was running upto 700 traps a week , 6 months a year and usually lost about 50 trap a year , mostly to badgers
  12. that wasn,t a dig at you personally, bill, you know the reasons i use trammels , i,m not going down that road again , at least you have rigged one up and had a go , more than can be said for some that spout off about something they have not even bothered to try over a season or two , what with fagin (molecatcher) sending me a book and you making me a net , looks like xmas is coming early now who else can i blag a freebee off ? :piggy:
  13. we have a rabbit net fence near us and theres a bit that hangs down , i train my young dogs to jump that , then move on to other stuff , get there confidence on one hight before you move on, make it a game , like chucking a ball over it or jumping it yourself while you encourage them to follow , its still a young dog , be patient
  14. agree with ya on this one , not humane at all
  15. there are plenty of people that will tell you not to bother with trammels as they are not needed , these folk don,t know what they are talking about , a trammel is a bloody good tool in the right situation regardless of what non useres say , i use trammels for most of my day work , never at night , they are not the be all and end all of netting , same as conventional nets ,, but when you work alone , as i do often , they can be the difference between catching and holding a rabbit and not , weight is not a factor either, the carring of the rabbits you catch is the biggest problem ,not an extra
  16. Very helpful! Forget about 'trammel' nets - in my opinion they are just the latest 'fad' in the ferreting/netting world. Have a look at the long-netting threads and you'll see what your friend was referring to. It's hardly 'set up and wait' but you don't need a ferret and can be an effective form of rabbiting if they are set in the right place trammels have bin on the go since before you and me , they are not a new fad at all , they are a handy tool in the right situation , this topic keeps going round in circles,
  17. Personally i'd say a dedicated trapping (mk4's and BMI's) and snaring campaign together with rimfire work. not nit picking , but mk 4,s are not the trap to use for rabbits
  18. you need to re-read your statement , it takes only 1 pest in the wrong place to cause massive problems , rabbits will never be totally wiped out , folk have bin trying for generations to rid the country of rabbits, rats and other assorted vermin
  19. Then I must have been doing it wrong all this time then . . . . I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one OTC you should try it , i trapped over 1500 rabbits this last summer using peat as a covering
  20. no it will not otc, peat is the best covering for fenn traps , trust me , i have tried everything over the years and peat is the best , i used to cover traps with sieved soil for years , but you always seemed to get sum run under the plate and when rabbits hit the treadle plate , they wouldn,t set the trap off and you were left with a clean plate and no catch, with peat being so light it bridges the gap between plate and frame leaving a hollow under the plate and nothing to impead the firing
  21. great little gun , don,t forget its limitations , for close up work i use 2", for normal rabbiting i use the 3"magnums ,
  22. and whats wrong with trying to snare gay pixies ?
  23. well obviously a rat smoker won,t work , you need a rabbit smoker for rabbits , durr i dont think you can get rabbit smoker mate but i would rather use a ferret anyways but john be tried it with smoke cartridges and it didnt work
