No disrespect intended for the old timers, but I really can't agree with that statement. In my opinion a competent professional trapper who really knows how to tune and use Duffus, Talpex, or other modern traps, can run circles around anyone using the old methods. Not to say the old methods don't work, just not as efficient as modern traps, in my opinion. Hmmm, thats open to question.....many a good tune played on an old fiddle! I'd like to see some made with proper clay pipe as per the original Saxon design.

i used to set mon , tues, wed , on thurs i take up what i set on mon and tues and on friday take up those i set on wed, didn,t leave any set over the weekend cos to many nosey people about, it wasn,t unusual to have 600-700 traps set by wednesday on good ground with plenty of moles i had 100+ farms to do thru winter and spring and i just turned up when i got there, the farmers knew i would get to them at some point, good weather did higher hill farms , shit weather did lower lying farms

granda bob , is the man that made them in cumbria and has shown quite a few folk how to do it,dunno if he was the first to make them with gas pipe , when i first met him , he wouldn,t pay silly money for mole traps when me could make them on winters nights for nowt,i have a double spring one off him that can catch two moles and the single spring single catch ones he favoured the biggest trouble with them is they are time consuming to set and bob was pretty good at using them and he could only manage to set around a day, once i showed him how i set half barrels, he started using them more

chuck most of that crap away stubby, owl decoy on your poles up a single tree with a dead jackdaw, make sure you break its wings so they move better in the wind or put a piece of black rag or bin bag under the owl, get yourself well hidden and blown like hell on your caller, sound like your dying, the jackies and carrion crows will come, rooks are a bit more jumpy, i have shot hundereds of crows using this method, its works best the first few weeks the young fledge but will work year round,

you can see the confidence building in that there rat, best thing i have watched all xmas, i have a rat out the back that i have bin after for 3 weeks now, talk about neophobia, this thing is paranoid, i have laid off for a few days so it lets its guard down, could have poisoned it , but i,m gonna trap it, just a personnal thing, i have had 3 others in traps around the place , but this thing just aint having it,23 years as a pro pester and i can,t catch my own vermin...yet

looks a handy little trap , got any pics of it set or with a catch?
-
i have to say , when i first saw these little traps and spoke to steve about them, i thought they wouldn,t be any good for setting numbers of traps , but since trying them, i reckon with practice you could set them fairly quickly , i read somewhere , could have bin on here, that they work well in frosty weather as they are not affected due to being up the tunnel rather than in the tunnel and covered , if i were starting up again i would have a good number of these traps as back up for frosty weather as working is better than twiddling thumbs

i got a sample solway feeders mk6 sent a couple of years back , they wern,t up to much , unless they have bin improved i would go for a genuine fenn

just had a look on the defra site , its about as easy to get round as the laws are to understand, my understanding of it is that any "clone" be it fenn or tube trap , is approved as it is similar to the named ,approved trap , whats a break back trap? , to me its a mouse/rat type snap trap , but could it be any trap that could break an animals back, like a kania , bg or fenn , or basically any trap that has sufficient force to break and animals back, its all bollocks really and needs defining properly because someone could easily break the law thru ignorance or misunderstanding, just look a

like most laws , it,s as clear as mud, or am i thick could this trap, made by logun, not be considered a clone , if not , how the hell do these shit chinky traps get away with it ?
-
i have no doubt i will be corrected if i,m wrong , but is there not a statement somewhere in the laws that says something like, "or similar design" in the the approval , it covers the foreign shit that is flooding the market at the moment, could be wrong , but i,m sure i read it somewhgere , could even have bin on here logun , i think your pm box if full, i,m interested in buying one of you traps for my collection , send me a pm

Old black fox ain't what he used to be
moley replied to JohnGalway's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
just curious as to the bodily condition of the fox, i have found that most old foxes are in great nick despite the state of there teeth, i guess they have learned to hunt effectivly, teeth or no teeth -
why not make places for them, i used to strim out tracks thru long grass, etc , like has already bin said , foxes take the easiest path
-
mine are always worked hungry, i dont feed them thru the day , they don,t fail thru the day , i,m out to catch rabbits and will gladly dig to any laid up, i have never dug to a sleeping ferret ,you cannot compare us to ferrets , we are designed differently

What killed 27 Koi in Shropshire?
moley replied to PeakOil's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Otters don't like to cross land? Your thoughts gentlemen please. typical bullshit comment by someone that knows nowt about animal behaviour, otter will travel for miles overland if they want to and they do mass killing , they are basically a big mink -
I have not used them against Dogs, but as per my other post if she is a tall dog and gets her feet close to the bait and then reaches down the loop may not go over her head and catch her properly, without seeing the dog and situation it is difficult to advise. If you do a couple of dry fires with the trap you can assess the way it throws and tightens the noose, think about how the dog would be positioned compared to a fox for which the trap is designed and make an adjustment as you think is needed. If it is a tall dog I would raise the trap on a mound or side of a hedge bank. Difficult to exp

you should take a look at how snares work these days, they have stops and are set in non tangle situations, not much chance of killing it if set carefully ,seems a better alternative than leaving it to run around and possibly cause a rta or turn into a stock worrier

i work mine hungry, not starving , just hungry , i have tried feeding before work and they don,t work half as well, they will bolt or kill and move on , but as i want the rabbits , i get a mark and dig , leaving dead or dying rabbits in a set is just a waste to me,i have passed up a days ferreting cos my ferrets are just fed and i know they will not work as well, when i walk away from a set i know its empty 99% of the time, everyone to thier own , but hungry ferrets for me everytime
