  1. Isn't there a show in Kilmacthomas this weekend? You's will have to go and let it be known your looking to buy a black terrier, money no problem. Especially ask amongst the knackers. Remember the terrier might be in the back of a van out of sight. If towards the end of the show you've no joy then start handing out flyers with the picture of the terrier on it.
  2. And through his writings in his books, magazines and the excellent year books has probably done more for the working terriers cause than most authors put together.
  3. And still they mightn't work out. What we ask these dogs to do is hard, very hard. But at the end of the day (or season) if you've reared a well bred terrier, entered it slowly and given it every chance and still it doesn't work out, you can tell yourself it wasn't your fault. When a youngster walks out it takes a bigger man to put it back on it's lead and think about it after than a man who'd quickly decide to leave it there.
  4. Don't know Sammy, I was refering to an article written about Mr. Erwin that openly stated that if you owned working terriers in Ireland they (most surely) went back to the terriers of Seamus Erwin and so the dogs of Middleton. I know a lot of serious terrier men in Ireland but don't know of any with anything to do with his terriers. Or would want to. I know they win some conformation shows though.
  5. Didn't say you were a macho man. It takes a lot of work/hours and experience for a terrier to learn it's trade. A terrier thats well bred and starts of well with some proper handling and some good luck should go on to be a worker. A youngster thats done well on a few (or many) digs could go to ground and for some reason come away. Untill we have x-ray vision we'll never know whats happening down below. We can only guess. Remember we're talking about a youngster here not a trusted worker. With a seasoned worker you should know what's happening.....but not always. For these reasons a young
  6. "Personally I don't" you say. You'd be better of getting out of the game. You've been listening to too many macho men.
  7. Neil, hope he makes the grade, yes Chaz is still with us fit as hell for is age 11, still does 5 miles on couples most mornings and could do more if i asked him, send me a pic of him and chilly if you can ? you becoming a show pony LOL Downsouth i know WILF a odd looking git but to say "my daughter still crys herself to sleep about that horrible man taking her bitch puppy" Cheers all, lets hope she's still with me in 2 years the sire at 2 and at 8, i'll have to get some more pic's of him this year Yeh Pickaxe, there easier on the back than the digging. Could y
  8. Who's to say Smithy didn't kill a badger, maybe a weak one or so. How would a badger have died at a trials? Six minutes ???? As for Middletons terriers? Well after reading an article about Seamus Erwin a couple of years ago it might be true. According to the article all of us in Ireland have Seamus to thank for our great terriers. Don't his terriers come down from Mr. Middletons? So maybe it's true. LOL
  9. A long time of being around hard working terriers, running dogs, strong dogs and hounds all feed the natural way wont make me see any other way. One of our local vets has a nickname for a whole load of dog ailments ,"pedigree chum syndrome" he says. Any one ever see a brood bitch regurgitate meat for her litter. Mammy knows best. LOL a good friend is good friends with one of the main manufacturers of working dog food in Ireland, a family run business. Once whilst drinking and drunk the dog food maker told my friend you wouldn't believe the crap we put in our dog meal. This is considered
  10. Pickaxe ,I have an 11 month grandson of your Chaz here. Should do a bit but feck does he look like a proper one. Turns heads. Is the old boy still with us?
  11. Very nice W.H. Can those breeds be bred naturally? I used to keep Chinese Painted Quail and was always told they can only be hatch artificially. In the last year I had them I had a hen hatch a clutch. Sadly they perished as I hadn't soaked food ready for them. Used to leave the bedroom window open on a warm Summers night and listen to them. Do you eat their eggs?
  12. If that's how clean your keeping your ferrets I'd say they're cleaner than 90% of others ferrets. Are we talking about swarms or clouds of flies? Or just some flies that would also be in the same numbers around your rubbish bin or garden shrubs. Flies go with the territory and as Ditch said flypaper will catch birds and I don't agree with spraying flyspray in the open air. Yesterday evening I picked up a bait box and shook it. I could hear a loud buzzing sound coming from it. It was a box I'd left a pint of maggots in. I left the lid of it and left it on a bench in the back garden overnig
  13. Bad advice IMO. Theres no such thing as a good dog food that comes in a bag or a tin for that matter. Continue as you mean to go on and I'd keep feeding the minced tripe (green I presume).
  14. My only experiences of chalk stream fishing is books and TV. The chalk streams always looked beautifully maintained and managed. The fish always look pristine and yes I'd say they blank as often as any other water. Ghillies/bailiffes ,labour and maintenance has a price.
  15. Did you hear anything? My guess is he killed a myxy rabbit.
  16. I'm having the same problem with a springer at the moment. When I switched from the dummy to dead game she wouldn't go back to the dummy. Her retrieving was 100% untill I started asking her to retrieve in conjunction with gunshot. She's not gunshy but is now doing excactly what your cocker is doing. But my bitch retrieves perfectly at home and even in the field might give me 2 or 3 perfect retrieves to hand and then lie beside the game before coming back to hand empty mouthed. Sometimes what works is to walk out with a rabbit in my hand so she can see it. Then I put her sitting while I walk
  17. The vet said Bayer would be doing it. They only got the letter the other day to say Bayer had been given a liscence to sell it. Thats all they know.
  18. I've just been to the vets about something else. I was asking him about lungworm as I lost a pup last year to it and I've heard it's getting more common. He asked had I many slugs in the yard. The vet tells me a new drip on (like frontline ) has just got it's liscence and will be available soon. It will do the usual parasites including lungworm. It's the first. The maufacturer's name is on the tip of my tounge but escapes me. They're one of the main manufacturers of wormers.
  19. they did , and they nearly won until he was mowed down and killed in a car accident . cant remember his name , i will try and find out Joe Graham?
  20. Nicotine patches? A saucer of beer.
  21. Have to agree with Doyler, a lot of the time the accused is not a pit bull. But the fact is you get bitten by a jack russell you shake him off, you get bitten by a pit bull. Different story. And I've been bitten by both. The poor old pit bull is a victim of his own success and would be better of if he looked like a poodle. Then he'd be still kept by the boys who should have them and not the macho men.
  22. Doesn't the hare suffer with the fluke too? I know the boys always dose them for the park meets.
  23. If a fox wants your fowl he'll try bloody hard to get them and sometimes snarelines, electric fences, human urine LOL and good ol' chicken wire wont stop him. I lost fowl this year and a dog in a run 20 yards away. That saying "if you kill one another just takes it's place" was tried by the antis years ago about mink hunting. It's regularly said about the fox too. Is there some place where foxes/mink are sitting there waiting for a vacancy to come up? The truth is if you cull some predators in the Winter it enlarges the territory of it's neighbours thus giving them a bigger food source. Yes
  24. So on your expertly Summer shoots when you shoot a vixen in milk you go looking for the cubs then, yes? Also when your sitting in the comfort of a vehicle calling in a stupid cub do you pat yourself on the back because your an expert? I bet you've all the warreners videos to watch when the weather gets cold.
