  1. Copper brake pipe is the way to go, use a plumbers pipe cutting tool to cut to length. Set at 6 inches from the eye. H
  2. The wire should be .457mm brass spun into a 6 strand snare about 24 - 26 inches long for hares. Set em high. It sounds like your snares are being hit and flattened by whatever is passing by. Set them high and cross the middle of a beat with a large noose. Think rabbit but bigger. H
  3. From what I have been told - mostly hearsay but who knows - the Fenn will not be banned, but the mark vi may lose its ticket for rabbit trapping and mink trapping. I don't believe the Fenn will be banned altogether. I do know that all traps which have been approved (even recently) are now undergoing EUROPEAN testing (when they can all agree on the criteria). This may affect some of the traps currently approved. Some info I know for certain and as I say some is merely hearsay. As for this thread...wow... Should we all perhaps agree that ALL traps including cage traps and snares should b
  4. I think replacement wires run at about £20 or so. I make my own using 4mm bowden.
  5. Just received a call from a distraught lady in my local area of Hampshire who has foxes in her garden. They have attacked her dog twice resulting in a vets bill for stitches, she also has small grand children which she feels she cannot allow out into the garden. The garden is large and secluded. Now the problem. Her daughter is an anti and does not want the foxes harmed in any way. I do not have cages so cannot remove them alive. The other problem of course is there are cubs. Any one who wants this paying job contact me via PM to receieve the customers conatct details. H
  6. Have taken a Jay in a body gripper when after squirrels and can catch them regularly with a larson at the back end of the year using acorns. We have a lot of Jays and magpies round here. H
  7. A full refund is better than nothing, but it takes very little to let someone know there is a problem with the order. H
  8. Have a look here http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/34844-rat-snaring/
  9. I have used 4 ply rabbit snares for squirrels, single strand stainless steel and bird wire. They all work but you must leave enough wire so that when the squirrel falls from the pole it cannot get purchase and climb back up or roll up the wire. I have had 3 squirrels break out of the single strand wire but not out of any other kind. H
  10. You stole someones traps and used them to catch pheasants? Muppet indeed.
  11. According to the Mendeley website the Hungarian Stone Marten lives mainly on small rodents, tree nesting or roosting birds but above all fruit. So try some local fruit in your cages and remove all other food stuffs available to them. Try covering some traps and uncovering others to determine if they prefer cover or not. Holdaway
  12. From all those that know him, I think we all wish him well and a speedy recovery. H
  13. The tealer pulls out of the ground when the rabbit enters the snare. The tealer is pushed into the ground far enough to hold and adjust the setting height of the noose. H
  14. I don't believe there is anything in the legislation about having snares in your possession which do not have stops on, you simply can't use them. The legislation covers the possession of locking snares only, however, better safe than sorry and get the stops on asap. From the picture in that report, the snares had penny washers as the locks and are illegal. The injury to the dog may well have been as a result of tackling a badger or fox, the only reason a dog would suffer such wounds, but again, the report may well have been blown out of proportion. As an aside, if you do have locking
  15. Well Chalkwarren did a fantastic job at my place. 7 nests and all within a 30 yard radius. H
  16. You don't need to boil any traps or snares for hours, traps can be dyed with proper trap dye or dip after on a few minutes and fox snares simmered for 20 minutes in tea bags will be more than dark enough to use. What I was laughing at was the fact that these things should be done for hours according to the experts. Like burying your new mole traps in the dung heap for a fortnight. H
  17. I see that the Defra code of practice for snares recommends boiling in washing powder for an hour to remove the manufacturer's scents. Then boiling in tea leaves and oak chips for another hour to stain. I guess that might also work for other traps. But without a vat it's impractical for cage traps. Or wooden traps. http://archive.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/wildlife/management/documents/snares-cop.pdf
  18. My Father was a Gamekeeper too, he blew what little brains he had out with a rifle and survived, obviously a very bad shot... died two weeks later. It's not uncommon. H
  19. That would be no different to snaring around a release pen, but don't attach the snare to the larson it will be ripped apart even if it is made of mesh. Stake the snare properly. H
  20. Nice to see John, well done. I wish more people would take the hard option and think of the bee first, a little (lot?) more work but well worth the effort. H
