You might not think it Droid but I was'nt disagreeing with you on your main points but I probably did'nt put myself over very clearly . You are right when you say populations ,be they human or animal ,often react badly to initial exposure to a novel disease and that a degree of aquired immunity is soon developed . This new immunity is often only valid if other living conditions remain at as high level. In conditions of stress ,such as is caused by overcrowding ,low nutrition ,poor housing or simply mental and physical "depression" these immunities may not be strong enough to f

It looks like home -made affair based on half a Duffus type trap. I think anyone using it for squirrels would end up loosing his traps . They'd just run off with em stuck over their heads and either like Chalkwarren said end up injured or manage to push them off .

The Myxomatosis virus -like any other -is constantly evolving to ensure its own survival . A disease that wipes out all its hosts will itself die out . So when the first wave of myxy came close to wiping out the rabbit population in the 1954 it was almost too virulent for its own good. Subsequent waves of the disease had less effect as a few rabbits started to recover and probably carry immunity for the rest of their short lives and possibly the milder strains of the disease took hold as the fatal strains "killed themselves out". I'm not convinced about immunity being

I've been lured out to a Halloween party and am due to pick a friend up on the way but she has just phoned in panic . "it's ruined .I can't go etc etc",she's ranting . Turns out there is a hole in her outfit. I sorta explain that it is a Halloween party - we are supposed to look a bit rough and scary. I need very little in the way of make-up of course. . It gets worse -or funnier. Seems the hole is actually the result of her IRONING yes IRONING her zombie costume !!!!!

Rubbish cage trap and an unlucky mink .

Most seem to be almost black with the little white chin marking . I've caught a couple that I suppose you'd describe as light pastel blue -a bit like the bluish colour in a merle collie . A local chap who used to follow the mink hounds has a mounted head of a beige one . It's only a guess but I'd hazard that white mink are probably the rarest in the feral state because I believe that due to birth defects they were quite hard to breed even in the hands of professional fur farmers . -
Usual problem ,as has been said ,is some sort of poor contact between the batteries and the either the little copper terminal set in resin in the middle of the main part of the transmitter or a poor connection between the battery and screw-on cap(the cap doubles as the negative battery connection - it is not just to keep the batteries from falling out!) or a bad connection between the screw-on cap and the main transmitter . Things to check; Copper terminal not dirty. -clean with rough cloth /fine sandpaper etc Screw threads clean and unworn. If the thread

This was taken almost in frustration a few days ago . I'd taken a few pics of some oystercatchers and turnstones (I think) but although I was quite close the pictures were rubbish because the little so n so'es were on the move all the time . In frustration I decided to do an arty shot instead .

Its the sort of thing you only see once in a while and it is always a wondrous experience . But to have a camera at the ready and to actually capture the action , thats got to be really special !

I've only ever owned one dog of the proper gundog breeds-a springer about 25years ago .Even when I was a keeper I used a lurcher or on more formal days a collie . Whatever breed I've always found squirrels excellent for training young dogs for early retrieving lessons on warm and cold game though. They are just the right size and balence.

Cowboy riding the trail comes across an Indian laying on the track with an ear to the ground . "What's going on ?" asks the cowboy. The indian looks up and answers," Stagecoach pass -by short time ago. Driver wearing green check shirt . All horses are black except nearside wheel- horse which is chestnut with white socks ". "Jesus ",exclaims the cowboy with admiration ," You red-men are sure gifted with fieldcraft skills . You mean you can tell all that just from listening to the vibrations in the ground ". The Indian looks up again and with a pained expression anounces

As trappa has said ,the traditional way is to hang the little mole corpses up as evidence of a job well done . From a landowner's point of view this was sometimes favoured for another reason as a mole hanging on a fence could not become a "pocket mole".This was especially important if the payment was on a per mole basis . I give moles to a chap who passes them to someone in the fly tyers Guild. As long as he does'nt want me to skin em he can have as many as he likes for nothing . Recycling .

I'm pretty sure that they ferret in several Southern European countries ,like Spain ,Greece and some of the Mediterranean islands e tc and I spoke to a Hungarian guy once who certainly knew about ferreting . It was about the only bit of language we had in common .

Rubbish cage trap and an unlucky mink .

Mounting it ? most definitely Whilst I have no intention of mounting it (maybe when it was still warm ) I am actually going to try to save the skull -something for the grand-childrens school nature table . I had a little collection of skulls but gave then to an artist friend who made a really spooky gothic sculpture with candles and dripping wax . -
The important part of the wording of the law in this case is "without good reason ". If you possess a knife over 3inches (or any similar edged tool such as 18 inch sythe for cutting the weeds on your allotment ) you are quite within the law as long as you have "good reason". In this case you had been legally rabbiting . The locking device on a lock-knife is simply a safety feature it is not to be confused with the mechanism of a flick knife . A flick knife is primarily a weapon whereas a gutting knife is a tool . It sounds like the policeman was mistaken .

Just a thought but before you take a firearm onto a customers premises be sure to get their permission and remember that in certain circumstances a vehicle counts as a public place so you can't always take it into the back of the van and shoot it.

Caught a few mink for a customer a while back and suggested -bad businessman that I am- that they really ought to get at least one trap of their own as they kept poultry and were surrounded by prime mink bandit territory-river ,ditches and carp ponds . I assured them that their little budget rat cage-trap really would'nt be up to the job. This afternoon the phone rang and I was faced with a 20 mile round trip to dispatch the mink they'd caught. What had they caught it in ? You guessed it ,the poxy rat cage . What's more the thing was'nt even deliberatly set and contained

Ah, the Aldrich spring -activated thingy for large non-indiginous carnivores? My thoughts exactly.

Can't fault the advice above about practicing with the locator because if it is a mk2 you will need some practice to interperet the signals . As above also;get your ferret used to wearing the collar while it is still in the cage and make any extra holes in the collar for tightening NOW not when you are in the field ! That's why collars get lost.

Mate I told you how deep they 'll work .10 feet -maybe a bit more with good batteries. If you don't believe me phone Deben or check out their catalogue . I do understand you need to be sure before you pay out good money for one but honest I'monly trying to help . All the best

It could have gone the other way ."it's a funny old game ". Might've had to conceeded defeat and gone back next week to try and pull one out of the net .

Was called to a football club to catch the moles that had signed on for the team in an unofficial capacity. Not being a buff of the game I could'nt tell you what formation they were using but one was definatly goal -hanging. "No pressure matey but we're playing tomorrow".Eek . That left less than a day to catch the little vandals and allow the groundsman a bit of daylight to reinstate the turf !. Set the traps and rather than face a 3/4 hour drive home and the prospect of repeating the trip later I took the puppy for her first look at the sea and a long walk on the nearby beach.

Well if the rabbits are in the holes and you can find all the holes in the dark of course it will work . Trouble is ,rabbits tend to be away from home at night and those that are at home might have rushed back to their burrows on your approach and might not be too keen on bolting . What about bolting rabbits to the lamp ...Just a thought Oh and what about finding or even worse digging to your ferret . All seems like hard going to me !

R Lockley who was involved with a lot of the original research into myxomatosis in this country recorded that a rabbit flea can live without a host for up to six days and reports finding live fleas on a rabbit that had been dead for a week. Interestingly though, in his experiments at spreading the disease in controlled circumstances the actual number of fleas involved was a very important factor . He took fleas from rabbits that had died of myxomatosis and tranfered them to healthy rabbits . Rabbits that received 10 or more fleas were dead within 11-13 days wherea

Found it . "Lurcher Appreciation Society " on facebook. "A group only for people who do not believe lurchers should be worked ".
