  1. L, I shot three fallow does last week and they all had amniotic sacs but no descernable foetus. Fallows normally drop their young slightly later than roe do, so the roe may well be further on in their pregnancy. I shot my last roe doe just after christmas so do not know their current status round here. I have stopped doe culling on my two other permissions, but have to carry on as long as possible on the golf course I shoot as the owner requires me to do so. I would lose the stalking if I did not do as he wishes. Fallow and wet golf courses do not mix well, and they cost the owner a l
  2. According to the reloading books i have, you can knock off about 25fps/inch that's removed from the quoted velocities for your original length barrel. This page is worth a read, http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_barrel.htm I hope this "shop" you are going to are giving you a good deal, with a lot of goodies thrown in for what they have put you through. If not tell them to stuff it and try another shop. I would and do recommend Macleods of Tain, they were brilliant with me and could not be bettered on price or service delivered. ft
  3. Martin, It is a commercial Electrolux Broadside blast chiller. I bought it from my FEO, who did not need it any more. Top man that he is, he knew I was looking for one and offered it to me. Previously I had a pepsi bottle chiller that was big enough for roe deer but not fallow. The Electrolux was not a bad buy for £95.00 ft
  4. FD, I bet you are good at jigsaw puzzles too I can get two roe and a muntie in there, anything else would be a bit of a squeeze. I would like to try though ft
  5. Colin Scott (Grampian Deer Management) does them. Mine is fully galvanised will fit in and on my Jimny and I can put it up on my own. It is a double. The best I have seen are by PD high seats, also fully galvanised and portable in a Jimny. Paul, of PD, is hard to beat on quality or price. Both the above take down into 3'6"/4' sections so are easy to manage. Bushwear ones look ok but i wonder how long they will last, but they are the only really lightweight folders for reasonable money. ft
  6. The .270 will drop anything that's on the game list in the UK, one friend describes his as being "like a laser". For any species of deer you will not do better, as good but not better The .243 is arguably the best all round calibre there is, brilliant for foxing and deer capable My advice is sell them both and buy a decent 6.5x55, you know it makes sense Atb, ft
  7. fd, I have mainly fallow, some roe and a few munties on the golf course, and roe and munties on my other deer permissions. I have yet to get to grips with the muntjac and have only had one so far. Roe are becoming more and more common around here. We first moved here in 1977 and there were no roe at all then, just fallow. I saw my first Worcs muntjac in 1984 and my first Worcs roe in 1999. The yearling fallow doe I had this morning weighed 46lbs van weight, no problems carrying that in a sack. It might be a bit different with a big buck though ft
  8. Most goes to the dealer mate .Sack is padded at the straps and sits well with just the one in.Glad to see someone else other than Martin gets some enjoyment out of me struggling FD, I only ask because I am more and more coming to the conclusion that I will have to have a Deer Sack. At the moment I am using a deer carcass tray with rope loop attatched to drag deer back to my vehicle. But I think a sack is a better option. There is member on another site who makes good looking "sika" sacks and I am tempted by them, but I was and am, impressed with your Kammo one. I will think of y
  9. Its amazing, you try for ages and get nothing and then get three in a week I didn't know how my chiller would cope with two fallow but as you can see, it does I think I may go for a pint at lunchtime ft
  10. I use a T8 with a neoprene cover, but would rather have a rifle without a moderator as they are much better balanced and look much nicer. On saying that, I do value my hearing so perhaps I better stick with one. Next time it will be a stainless steel one, perhaps the MYM or PES scout. I don't want an ally one, they may be lighter but wear out quickly with the hot gasses produced when firing. Not fussed about modular as long as it is stainless. ft
  11. Well done FD, you are having a good year. Do you process all the meat yourself? I will admit i was impressed with that roe sack of yours, are you still pleased with it? Is the back of it padded? I have your picture, the one where you are explaining how many roe you carried in sign language, saved on my computer........ It makes me smile every time I look at it ft
  12. L, I was recommended to use 140gn Federal power-shok's in my Sako and they were outstanding. I could produce 3/4" groups at 100yds off the bi-pod in a field, not bench resting. I could not get any Federal's when i last bought ammo so i bought RWS 140gn. They were £1. a bang, so I bought reloading equipment! They are not quite as accurate as the Federal's through my rifle, i only get 1" groups with these. Although for the real world, this is perfectly acceptable. I have used 156gn Norma Oryx but not enough on live quarry to give a valid opinion, at 100yds they gave 1" groups at 100yds.
  13. WB, I had the tenderloin fillets for lunch today, they were delicious. Damn the cholesterol, I fried them in butter with garlic, S&P, a couple of freerange eggs, fresh crusty bread and butter It's a good job the wife doesn't read this as i am supposed to be being careful with what i eat. Mind, I didn't waste much ft
  14. Well done again, were they anywhere near the marks we saw when you showed me your high seat. Andy No Andy, they were about 150 yards down that fairway, coming from the main entrance to the course and heading down to the rough by the river. The marks we saw, i think, are being made as they come out at night. I have not seen any there in the morning, as yet. ft
  15. FD, Since I got some permissions with deer it's amazing how popular I've become Which is odd for a big miserable old begger like me I'll carry your bags and drive you mate L, Sycophancy will get you anywhere...... I'm a prime example, it's how i got my stalking ft
  16. You'd think so wouldn't you, but no. "Just the one, is that all", were the exact words. Still, he was pleased with the fillets I delivered today. I had another this morning, just to keep the chiller filled you understand I put up a free-standing seat yesterday, near where i showed you my lean-to (now moved), it gives a great veiw down two fairways, and then I christened it this morning I use Arbus Cobra 5m cables to secure my seats, with a good padlock. They are plastic covered and make less noise than chains for securing the seats. I need two of them for the free-standing high
  17. An over & under 12 bore with 28" multichoke barrels that weighs somewhere in the region of 7.25lbs. With this you can shoot clays, game, wildfowl and if you are young and strong do some walked up shooting too. It's what i bought. If you want to do mainly clays one with 30" barrels might be better, and a little heavier. Mainly game shooting and you could go a little lighter. Atb, ft
  18. She weighed 58lbs after she was fully dressed out, head off and legs taken off at the joints but still with her jacket on. And looks very nice in my chiller She did have an amniotic sac but it was just liquid. Unfortunately the owner of the course has no option but to continue to cull as they make such a mess of the course. Ideally, I would not cull does after Christmas but because of local circumstances, and to keep the stalking, I will keep going untill the end of the season on this, and near neighbouring patches. The course butts up against a large wood which is owned by a vio
  19. When I tried to buy the Deerquest CD-ROM the woman at the BDS told me they were fetching £350 on ebay, when one came up. ft You have PM
  20. This is interesting. When i took over a permission two years ago I had a chat with the neighbouring lads that do the deer culling on the other side of the river. I ended up with permission to shoot deer from one bank of the river Avon over into a big hill on the other side. I did not think this would be possible but I approached our local FEO about the legalities, and the answer was "yes, it's legal". They were absolutely fine about it. ft
  21. The fallow are really coming down off the hill at the moment, and fortunately I was in the right place at the right time, for once. They don't half do some damage to a wet golf course. ft
  22. Ouch Thanks FD. I have not heard of this before, anyone else had a deer with one? ft
  23. As for stainless etc. unless your going to sell the meat (which would be illegal unless you have a game-dealers licence) why worry. John I do not think this is true, I quote from the "Food and Hygiene Legislation"; September draft 10 6. HUNTERS AND THE HUNTER EXEMPTION For the purposes of this food hygiene legislation, hunters are people who shoot alone or are active members of a hunting party (which would include non-shooting gamekeepers, ghillies, beaters and pickers-up, but not mere spectators). THE HUNTER EXEMPTION This exemption recognises the close relationship bet
  24. FD, does your local council have an incinerator that you can use, or do you have to make other arrangements? I only ask as our council do not have a carcass disposal system in place and the Croome Hunt one no longer works, or so I am told by a guy on the supporters comittee. Touch wood, I have not had to have one incinerated yet. ft
