  1. I’ve written it before but I had a dog years ago that thrived on those foxes or whatever that rained it down on the dog .He had the knack of showing the side of his neck then taking hold when matey had him .Drew many a varmint like that .Saw it several times on breaking through and in an old cable duct on derelict airforce camp nearby and once in a pile of concrete slabs dumped in a hollow . Never bred one like it since though but he left a good stamp behind .

  17. Once a type or line is settled upon the entering becomes a blur ,it’s almost a given and failures a surprise .These threads on entering sometimes have me thinking about what exactly I do to enter the young terrier and the answer is apart from chauffeur them from hole to hole ,absolutely nothing ,it’s all on them .Ive been all over the place digging and I’m no longer surprised by the antics some get up to just to get a dog started . Keep calm and let them do their thing is my advice .Forget all the old fail safes and last chance remedies . I think the older you get the more relaxed ab
  18. A good terrierman has a good idea when they are ready but you are right they are not machines
  19. The original question is does it do any harm to not reward a dog with a rag and the answer is no it doesn’t .Personally I think if you start a pup off by teasing it with a carcass then it will always be a ragger .Starting a pup the natural way ie no encouragement at all by an earth usually makes for an animal that sees the work as it’s calling and not the end of the job .However ,any terrier can be wound up enough to rag a carcass ,it’s in their nature especially if joined by another .Ive owned both ,it’s not easy keeping some off a dead fox when they are screaming in your ear .
