  1. As Mark pointed out ,the long tines usually show age in a buck but by no means a hard and fast rule .
  2. Most of my stalking is still covered with crops of one sort or another but on this particular farm ,there is a set aside piece right in the middle .Half of it has volunteer rape growing very raggedly and the rest is just bare earth .The hedges around it are very lush providing an ideal habitat for the roe deer .I bumped a doe as i approached this field but she obligingly ran off in the opposite direction .No gates on this farm as its all arable so a quick scan around the area immediately behind the gateway gap and i crept into the field.A doe was reaching up to browse the hedge about 70 yards
  3. Im glad to say the sack held up but a rethink is in order before shooting two mature bucks again

  9. Silencer on a ratcatcher ?I thought it was a waste of time trying to silence 7ft/lb as it was so slow as to not be affected by the silencer .May be wrong but always a first time
  10. Good to be out again isnt it mate .We had a look out but still too much cropping around us for propper calling .Managed one cub and an old dog fox last night .

Frogs dont tend to travel far from water but toads are far more at home in dry conditions.Watched a heron going beserk a while back,darting its beak everywhere, and on flushing it i saw the reason why .Couldnt step without moving froglets .Disused canal with a healthy weed growth was very frog freindly this year .
  13. Looks like a male too .Females are generally gold in colour with black line down the centre of the back.Saw a gravid female last week but as usual no phone or camera .

  16. A recent visit to Cricket st Thomas ,yes the one near Chard ,revealed a monster swimmimg along the dam wall feeding on surface trout pellets .Had to be 8-9 pounds and this is a landlocked lake with a trickle of a stream in and out .Artificial feeding i know but what specimen isnt these days .

  18. Certain amount of quality missing from the stands i thought and as you say ,a lot smaller than other years .

Went yesterday and today .Stayed at a hotel nearby .Not bad but not as good as other years .Fishing village more of a couple of houses Lot of stands side by side selling same stuff at different prices but did manage a good quality roe sack and lamping kit with the new L I battery .Food scandalous as well as beer at £3.50 a pint .
  20. Just bought the kit from CLA .Lithium ion plus striker 170 .Set me back 260 notes but its only money and what price a good nights ,back pain free lamping .The battery was £147 alone !
