Transporting a pup from Oxford to Aberdeen
Lost Generation posted a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Right guys, one of my deerhound / greyhound pups has a new home in Jockistan just north of Aberdeen and sometime from the middle of this month on, I need to transport him from Oxfordshire to Haggis-Town and would appreciate sensible suggestions as to the best way of doing this to try and minimise the journey time and stress on the pup without having to drive him up myself. I was wondering if anyone on here is doing that run and could transport the pup for me for a fee or if there are greyhound carriers who could get him up north, he wouldn't necessarily have to go as far as Aberdeen but it wo -
Have you tried Dave Platt? pm me if you need his number.

Size can come from the greyhound as well as the deerhound, I'm running a 30" 1/4 deerhound / 3/4 greyhound bitch which was out of a 28" first cross bitch sired by a 31" coursing greyhound dog. Pure bred deerhound aren't nippy over a short distance but they are also not by any means slow, what they can lack is nippiness and agility although almost any of them will seriously outpace the cloddy bull cross types whose pictures are always being posted up on this site attracting the inevitable "nice strong dog that mate" comments! Deerhounds have a huge length of stride and decent stamina and are p

Barrel weight isn't just about need. Some people, myself included shoot much better with a heavy barrelled rifle. In my case this applies from air rifles upwards, lightweight rifles just don't suit me.

Frampton country fair 12th september
Lost Generation replied to mike1458's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
I went to Frampton as well, great show as usual, got there early and left early so missed the usual huge traffic congestion getting out. I didnt watch the lurcher or terrier shows but these things are always just rubbish anyway so why bother? -
spot on T7 whats the differance between the striker and the blitz,, i would be using it for rabbits the blitz is twice the size of the striker and so is the beam, the striker is plenty big enough for rabbits, blitz is good when your needing a beam that can reach 2 feilds away for bigger stuff pre ban. Nonsense the blitz and striker use exactly the same 100W bulb and bulb holder, handle etc and so put out exactly the same amout of light. The striker has a 170mm diameter reflector and the blitz has a 240 mm reflector i.e. the blitz's reflector is 41% bigger not twice the

First Lurcher - Deerhound x Greyhound?
Lost Generation replied to Little Butch's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Most of the advice that gets posted on here about entering dogs seems to be from town dwellers who just go out in to the country and run their dog from a slip and never seem to exercise their dogs anywhere they will regularly come across game. I am in a more fortunate position because I only have to walk a few hundred yards to be in open fields and wooded hillsides full of game. Pups grow and mature at different rates. I have never really deliberately entered a dog to game mine just self-enter when thay are ready. I take my pups out and about with me and exercise them loose several times a day -
First Lurcher - Deerhound x Greyhound?
Lost Generation replied to Little Butch's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I wouldn't worry too much about size either. I have had lurchers and longdogs for about 35 years I started with small dogs and later went over to big dogs. In the past I certainly regularly found myself with a dog too small to do the job but I have never yet found myself with too big a dog and I have had dogs up to 31" and a bit more. A big dog will do everything a small dog can do but there are many things a small dog can't do. The two best day and night rabbiting dogs I have seen have been 26" and 30", the best hare killer was 27", the best fox dog was 28" and the best deer dog was 30". To c -
First Lurcher - Deerhound x Greyhound?
Lost Generation replied to Little Butch's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
A deerhound greyhound should be perfect for what you want and it's nice to see a youngster thinking about getting something other than a bull cross. Don't just restrict yourself to a first cross though, it would also be worth thinking about a 3/4 grey / 1/4 deerhound or a line-bred deerhound greyhound pup because there are a lots of dogs out there which have been bred deerhound/grey to deerhound/grey for a number of generations and which produce very typy dogs that generally do the job well. Just remember, deerhound greyhounds are superb natural hunters and given the time and space to lear -
I've got both, and only use the blitz from a vehicle as it's too big and clumsy for walking and the beam isn't much different to the striker anyway

Can anyone Identify this moth?

I think that I've got it now: Poplar Hawk-moth Laothoe populi -
I was wondering if anyone can identify this moth which I found dead on grassland this morning, I'm not sure if the torrential rain has washed any colour off it. Cheers. i

Read what I have posted above, several close life-long friends of mine were involved in some of the incidents he describes and I have seen some of the dogs figured in the book work. Now, I'm no friend of his, but despite not liking the bloke I can assure you that he has done more than most on here will ever dream of. A lot of what he writes about happened before you were even born, but he was very well known in certain circles at one time and had a certain influence on the development of the patterdale at one time. I'm also about to start writing a book and believe me, many of the details of p

As you say, you don't know the man.

Country Mischief and its follow on are not works of fiction. Now I'm no fan of Didrikson the man, but he has done a lot and undeniably he does write well. A number of my mates were involved in various incidents portrayed in the book and Colin has changed some of the details of people and places to protect himself/portray himself in a favourable light (as all writers do) and to protect/conceal the identity of others (mostly people he has fallen out with over the years, and believe me there is a long list of former mates of his who have well-founded grievances with him). Also, he's writing about

They will be worked hard and need to take the knocks. I have a 3/4 grey / 1/4 deerhound bitch in pup at the moment and due to deliver next weekend. My bitch is a very, very good allrounder and outstandingly good on heavy quarry. She is in pup to Dave Platts pure deerhound Turpin so the pups will be 5/8 deerhound / 3/8 greyhound. This breeding throws pups very similar to first cross deerhound/grey but usually with a bit more coat, pm me if you want more info. Cheers. Hello, Whats the height of the bitch? Seems a very intersing cross that would suit the my local ground! Cheers

which bull x to choose
Lost Generation replied to scottish carper ingram's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
What do you intend to use the dog for and over what kind of ground? These are the issues that should determine what kind of dog you get and if you can post this kind of information then you are likely to get more informed replies. Different types of lurcher come in and out of fashion. When I started in the early 1970's deerhound crosses were all the rage, then collie crosses came into fashion and to hear a lot of the bullshit around at the time you would have thought that nothing but a collie cross could possibly catch a fox or even a rabbit. After that saluki crosses got very fashionable and -

I'm old enough to recall him. He was a great sportsman, a fantastic lurcher breeder and a genuine free spirit. RIP Mick.
