  2. I'm from the Gloucestershire Cotswolds but live just 'out of area' in South Oxfordshire' now. I'm in the Forst fairly regularly and love the area but have just learned to run, then hunker down and pull a thermal blanket over my head at the first sound of banjo music...............
  3. Yes, I know, he is kind of attached to it though so I thought i would ask around.
  4. A mate of mine has an old Webley .410 bolt action shotgun. Unfortunately he lent it to an idiot who lost the bolt. I know it's a long shot but I was just wondering anyone here has a spare bolt or knows where I might get one? Cheers.

  7. Generally I agree with you. Show breeding has ruined many breeds and created monsters along the way. If you are going to have breed standards for working breeds then those standards need to reflect an ideal working conformation and be adhered to. A lot of deerhounds now are bigger than they were historically and have a smaller colour range - but you can blame that on the writings of Sir Walter Scott who made grey the fashionable colour for these hounds. Fortunately a significant proportion of deerhound owners have always worked and continue to work their hounds and thanks to Mr Cassells and ot
  8. Well, I must have been hallucinating earlier this afternoon then when my deerhound bitch, (bred from a long line of workers or did I hallucinate that as well) was out with the terriers, and appeared to be appeared to be working (and working well) the game they turned out of cover. In my experience something north of 50% of UK deerhounds work live game which is probably a higher percentage of workers that you will find among collies these days most of which don't do anything more than chase balls around the park. Im more than pleased you own a Deerhoundy that see,s graft, few pures are work
  9. What does make a worker in your eyes? How often does a dog have to work to be considered a worker? I live in a place with a lot of game all around. Now, year in year out, barring illness and business trips away, I have worked my dogs just about every day of the year for more than 40 years now. I do a lot of daytime work with terriers, lurchers and hounds and some lamping. I used to do a lot more lamping but not so much now, except as we roll into winter most of the time I am taking the dogs out in the evening in the dark, so I take the lamp with me and run whatever I come across and I come ac

I'm a fan of deerhounds but "north of 50%" work live game????? c'mon, surely

  15. Andrew Bartholomew - Iffley Vets, Oxford 01865 242600, Make sure that you see Andrew himself though - he is semi-retired and only works one and a half days per week, he's a specialist in musculo-skeletal injuries to running dogs and used to be the vet to the Oxford greyhound track before it closed. People bring running dogs some way to see him.
  16. I lost my old 3/4 bred bitch in January and the bitch I had out of her has just been diagnosed with a terminal heart problem so I am looking for a 3/4 greyhound / 1/4 deerhound bitch pup in the UK. Cheers
  17. Thank you gentlemen it does look as though you have identified it. It looks like the Cauliflower fungus and is growing on the roots of a pine tree but the season is wrong. The guides say that you will find the cauliflower fungus from September to November but this appeared in March. I pass by that spot once a week or so but don't think it was there earlier but I guess that I could have overlooked it because I am normally trying to keep up with the terriers and lurchers working cover on the bank above it and we have had some very peculiar weather the last few months so it could just have appear
  18. Nope, not a liverwort, it's definitely a fungus not a plant.
  19. Can anyone help with the identification of this fungi - see pictures. These pictures were taken about a week ago (16th March 2106) in a forest in South Oxfordshire. The fungus was growing on the ground, possibly on the roots of a large broken off old pine tree which was one of a small clump of about half a dozen pines in a predominantly hardwood forest. The clump of fungi was about the size of a large football / beachball.
  20. It's a hoax, no truth in it at all.
  21. Two or three years ago I put an old previously unlicenced underlever hammer 12 gauge on my ticket. This was a family heirloom and was found in an old trunk when a relative died. I phoned my FEO who said just put it on your ticket and write to the firearms licencing department to inform them that you have acquired it. I did this, had no problems and have since renewed my certificate without any issues so it can be done
