  1. Nice motor Mr Teapot, it is definitely NOT a hairdressers car. The special edition models in bright green (Verdi) and the pinky red (Rossini) were reckoned to be the hairdressers favorites. Have fun with it, they are very robust and reliable.I have had Suzuki 4x4 for years, and always been pleased with them.
  2. I am also about to choose a new spotting scope. I have seen advertised a scope and tripod kit for £150 at London Camera Exchange. This was in a RSPB magazine. I don't know how good these are, haven't looked myself yet, but might be a good starting point if you have a LCE branch near you?
  3. Also on Countryfile, they said that the Welsh Assembly had given the go-ahead for a pilot cull in Wales. I don't think they were specific where abouts this would happen. If the Welsh results show an improvement in bovine tb, then the shower in Westminster have to take notice of this. During an interview, Hilary Benn who is in charge at Defra, sort of said he is going to make his findings known on Monday. Then again, politicians can not be relied on to be truthful can they? I have heard that when a scientific study group is set up, the politicians tell them what the findings should be!
  4. Before using the bronze brush, I always push a ball of bog-roll down each barrel, using the cleaning rod and jag. This removes all the loose deposits and keeps the brush cleaner. A small smear of grease on the barrel pivot lugs is good, and if you have a multi choke, even if, like me you rarely change the chokes, you still need to remove them once a month - ish. Clean the threads and refit using a little oil, a nip up is all they need. A touch of oil on the final wool mop through is good. Finally, get a silicone cloth and polish off all finger marks. Hold it with the cloth as you put it in the
  5. Welcome to the forum Ian. You live in a lovely part of the world. I have had some great holidays, staying around Hawick. There are always questions on gundogs, you should be able to advise some people. We all learn from each other.
  6. Hello Matthew, and welcome to the best hunting and country sports forum. Plenty of help and advice on here. I know nowt about ferrets myself, but there are plenty around who do.
  7. I have used a Lanber sporter for years. The Field model will be mechanically similar I would think. Perhaps a little lighter, narrower top rib and auto safety probably. They are a good reliable gun, and will stand years of hard work. They do go wrong sometimes, firing pins break, barrel selector falls out. That sort of thing is easily and cheaply repaired by any gun smith. Would I have another? Yes, but if buying new, then in the same price range you could find a used Beretta which would probably be a better buy.
  8. Wud you say it was capable of taking down rabbits. That wub b its primary job. Wife might get a little go at some point, But you no boys and there toys. Absolutely! Yes, the Exocet is a good rabbit gun,but as dixy says 30 yards is about it's best for reliability. As he also mentions the BSA Lightning as well, that is a good gun too. My pal at work has just had a new "plastic fantastic" tactical model in .177". This is a super rifle too, and if I was to have to choose between that and the Webley, then the BSA would win my vote I think.
  9. I don't shoot foxes, as on my permission the rabbit is the one to be controlled and if I get a bit of help from Charlie then that's great. Sometimes I think when reading through the posts of how many foxes are being shot, that they were better off being hunted traditionally! This government and the right on tree hugging lefties have a lot to answer for, apart from illegal wars and crippling taxation.
  10. You are right jimjim, the Jimny is VERY capable off road. They are only a 1300 engine, so towing a horse box or something is out of the question, and they are quite small inside. However, if you don't need lots of room, but do need to go off road then they are just the job. I have a later model with the VVT engine, and they don't hang about, being happy enough to cruise at mph as long as you want. The fuel consumption is crap at that sort of speed though. The LJ is well obsolete now, and was replace in 1984 by the SJ410, that was a capable little beast but it's 970cc engine was a bit short
  11. My lad has a exocet xs in .22, he is well pleased with it. He has put a few thousand pellets (accupel) through it and had no problems at all. It seems to be making the 10 ft/lbs mark, and is fairly quiet thanks to it's moderator. Probably a little crude, compared to the more expensive "shooting machines" but strong and reliable anyway.
  12. Shooting from your car on your permission? No problem at all, but fold the door mirrors out the way!!
  13. I can see why you might think this Daf, but these lads are supposed to keep rabbit numbers down. They were just equipped with a Deer rifle on this occasion. You can never be sure, of the effect of a bullet (of any size) strike on anything. I have often seen this "gutting" type of injury with a .17 hmr. Even my .22 RF, which will often leave no apparent mark, is capable of gutting smaller rabbits. For real overkill, have a look on u-tube for the barmy yanks, exploding prairie dogs with .50 rifles. That is a bit sick I think.
  14. Great shots byron. You do seem to find the butterflys etc. I have hardly seen one yet. Still plenty of time i guess.
  15. and NSU if i remember rightly????....didn't they have a touch clutch on top of the gear stick aswell? You are right Sean, I had forgotten the NSU. I can remember the "button on the gear lever" to work the clutch too, but I think it was on the wankel (careful) engined NSU RO80 only, but could be wrong.(They used oil like a two stroke anyway). Tomo, yes you are right about there being 3* and 4* fuel, there was also 5* for very high compression engines. Think that went in the late 70's? All these fuels were leaded of course. Premium unleaded is about 95 octane, similar to 3*, and Supe
  16. Nice shots Chester. Some of them appear to be looking at you, perhaps they don't consider you a threat yet. Did you get closer and cause them to run or skirt round them?
  17. He is probably looking for food. Is there a pond he could be eyeing up from that particular roof? There is a Heronry at the back of the clay shoot I go to. We have seen as many as 15 on the wing at once. They also come down 2 or 3 at a time, onto my permission which is nearby. They poke about among the vegetation, looking for frogs and things I suppose. Also they investigate horse muck piles for wriggly things.
  18. Well I got a card off my Collie!! Been up on a narrow gauge railway, driving all day. Dads were allowed to travel free, as long as their kids brought them! Had a very nice day, and got cards and presents off my "kids" when I came home.
  19. I remember selling petrol (4*) at 35.5 pence per GALLON!!! You could not get £2 worth in a Mini unless it was running on fumes. Also, still on motoring memories, does anyone (except this old git) remember the two-stroke engined cars? They were all different, but fuelled the same way. (A pint of sae 30 in the tank followed by four gallons of 2*. Most common was the Saab, then Wartberg, then DKW, now part of Audi.
  20. Hello Andrew, welcome to the site. There should be plenty of interesting articles and help / advice available for whatever sort of sport you prefer.
  21. Nickersons are still trading in Louth Lincolnshire,www.ukhunting.com or phone 01507-610084. They import the Lincoln shotgun range, Ugartechea range and Cometa air rifles. They have no doubt sold some guns under their own name, these would be likely Spanish or Italian but stamped as Nickersons. I can't help with details on your gun, but if you contact Nickersons direct, I am sure they will be able to.
  22. Hit by a Rottweiler? Not half mate! I used to "run criminal" regularly for dogs doing and training for working trials. Lots of different dogs, GSD, Dobes, BSD types etc. The one who I will never forget was a Rottie named "King", he was one big bugger, even by Rottie standards. He enjoyed his manwork, particularly a running criminal. He developed his own style for catching you, this was a grip from behind on your upper arm then a split second later you got his feet in your back. This was like being hit by a sandbag, and I always ended up on my face in the dirt. He was a nice dog when not on duty
  23. Couldn't have put it better myself doga.
  24. Hi turtowil, you could have clarified this at the shop before taking the gun home. There are several different ways the makers identify their chokes. A trawl through the gun section may fill in the blanks if I don't. Probably the most common is the notches machined in the outer end of each choke, yours may be like this. No notch = Skeet or Cylinder (somewhere between zero and .005", so a small restriction or same size as the barrel tube). 4 notches = 1/4 choke (.010" restriction). 3 notches = 1/2 choke (.020" restriction) 2 notches = 3/4 choke (.0
  25. My .22 is zeroed at 100 yards. I recently took a distant rabbit, thinking it was about that far out (Most of my shots are probably 50 to yards). Anyway, when I picked it up, cleanly head-shot, I looked at the Jeep and thought it was a long way off. Walking as straight as I could, it took 130 strides back to the Jeep. I would probably have not taken the shot if I had known it was that far. Due to the flat, open field the rabbit was in and lack of cover, getting closer was not really an option.
