  1. I'm not sure if Foxing Machine is suggesting that anyone snaring rabbits at this time of year is an idiot; or signing off as 'idiot'.......
  2. Plenty of topics in the FAQ section above here. Just take a look or do a search. You've got no chance of a job in pest control until you are over 18 so use the time wisely and improve your literacy skills while it's still fairly easy to do so.
  3. Stupid? You seem to forget that some of us make our living from controlling vermin. It should also remembered that while the humble coney is a very sporting quarry, it is also a serious pest that needs to be controlled all year round in some areas. There is no close season for rabbits, and I can't see there ever being one. Folks seem mighty quick to chuck insults around on here these days. 'Faggot', 'Stupid' and 'Idiot' all in the last few posts. Is it school holidays again already?
  4. Jack read some of the threads posted in the FAQ section. At 16 I would advise you to either continue with your education for as long as you can (you need to be able to write good reports these days), or get yourself a gamekeeping job. Modern pest controllers need to be able to drive, and some sites do not allow entry by under 18's. Have a read.
  5. Touched, I be fellas But seriously........ do we really need all this? Someone posts a picture of a snared fox, soapboxes are climbed, and toys thrown around........... 'Tis only the t'internet boys and girls. Life continues. It's sad for the little 'cubbywubbies' that died in vain, but I'm sure that Micky will carry on killing coneys, with or without the thread being removed. Me? I'm off to kill something. It always makes me feel better.
  6. Malt, I understand and agree that we need to be careful. Moderating isn't easy, and I respect your decision. I didn't actually see the offending post, but can you clarify if there was anything illegal posted? What offence (In England)is commited when someone catches a fox cub in a rabbit snare unintentionally?
  7. I disagree. Which laws have been broken here? When you look at the crap that is regularly posted on the dog sections, this is nothing. Many people have been on here and learnt a great deal. Instead of using this as an opportunity to educate less experienced members about the risk of catching non-target species, everyone is laying into Micky and suggesting that he is a liar. Sweeping stuff under the carpet is never a good idea. i didnt say you broke any laws wind your neck in if you dont like critizism dont post I didn't suggest that you did Rio. The point I was
  8. Why not? Surely one of the great things about this forum in the past has been it's ability to educate the less experienced? Although since my return I can see that there are less helpful and informing posts and much more bitching. People are far too quick to judge others on THL these days.

  10. I may be missing something here, but why 'disgraceful'?? Snares are not very discriminate, and accidents happen. It's not like it's a protected species that was caught; foxes are considered to be pests by most folks, and I don't think they are the usual quarry of Micky. I think that Micky is getting a hard time for little reason. He may not be DB Plummer when it comes to writing up his exploits, but he regularly posts pictures and obviously does a bit.
  11. Sorry, just re-read that again; he could mean that only one fox was accidentally snared, the other was shot intentionally. I still can't see that Micky set the snares with the 'intent' to catch foxes.
  12. i did one of them . ... He wasn't saying that he set the rabbit snares for foxes. I think that what he was trying to say was that he had to dispatch one of the cubs because it was still alive. The other one was dead already. I haven't seen anything to suggest that Micky intentionally used rabbit snares to catch foxes. Storm in a teacup if you ask me...........
  13. Well, it had to happen...... I just couldn't resist logging in to reply to this thread Firstly, as OTC has stated, the Fenn trap was designed to be used in a tunnel. This is not just my opinion, nor is it just law, but it is also how the man who invented the trap intended for it to be used. What is the basis for my opinion? A conversation I had with the inventor (Alan Fenn) a good few years ago. Now the armchair experts can mumble all they like, but for my money, that's as good as it gets. As for not using a tunnel in law, I think there was a prosecution some years ago, where a
  14. For me, this issue is not about people making money from traps, it's about the law. For anyone to come on here and 'incite' others to break the law by using unapproved traps is out of order. As previously stated; hats off to the original poster for making something, but please bear in mind that anyone can read this forum and encouraging people to ignore the law will not make any legitimate trapper look good. The law is the law, whether we agree with it or not, and responsible trappers work within it.
  15. 10 out of 10 for effort, but as 120 says, NOT LEGAL for use in the UK. Any 'spring' trap needs to be approved before use. That is one of the reasons why spring traps cost as much as they do; it is an expensive process getting a trap through the approval system and on the statute book.
  16. Yes, it is a legal requirement to use tunnels with fenns, even when they are used indoors (as specified in the STAO). The reason for that is that the Fenn needs a roof to make it work humanely. The height of the roof needs to be just enough to allow the trap to work. Too high, and you will get foul catches. Good to see a few rats being caught FD - keep up the good work, but don't forget to leave a few for all the poor old Wiltshire pesties!!!
  17. I used to use them years ago when old Kieth was alive and they had their shop. For the last 10 or so years, I've used Pat at Bridport Nets (Link Here), who really knows his stuff and will make you anything you need. Agouti also has an excellent reputation (Link Here), in fact, I've just ordered some bits and pieces off him myself. Personally, I like to deal with people who use their own products and understand them.
  18. Are you using tunnels? If not, that will explain the foul catch, and the fact that some of your earlier captures are around the belly. Fenns (both Mk4 & 6) must have a tunnel, not only to protect from non-targets, but more importantly so that the trap has a 'roof' to work against (Fenns throw their victims upwards, which is why they foul catch without a tunnel roof to work against).
  19. JK comes from my neck of the woods; in fact, I went to school with his lads. I'm not over fond of his TV work, but he has a good heart, and is doing something he loves. As others have said, he was a bit of a 'lad' in his day; and I think some of the loud mouths on here would be very brave to slag him off to his face.
  20. £10 per hour might sound very attractive as a 'wage', but as a business proposition, it makes no sense at all. Try working out your cost of operating - including all the 'hidden' costs; like training, certification, insurance, trade body membership etc, etc, and divide that by the number of days you expect to work each year (usually around 200) and the number of 'calls' you expect to make each day. Whatever you come up with, bear in mind this forum can be viewed by anyone, and ranks very highly on google. To provide potential customers and competitors with what is known in the busine
  21. They are buying up land and selling it on once they've retained the sporting rights.

    laws on cats

Sorry Earth, but that statement is WRONG! Cats do not become feral when they are not on their owners property. Cats remain the property of their owner wherever they are, and their owners cannot be held responsible for their actions. If you kill or injure a cat (or your dog does) then you are liable for damages. Anyone killing a feral cat must be able to prove that they have carried out resonable precautions to ensure the animal is feral (in the eyes of the law) before they kill it. Using a dog for the purpose of killing a cat would also be an offence.

    laws on cats

Not quite right, sorry. Cats are the property of their owner, regardless of where they are. Owners of cats cannot be held responsible for the actions of their cats - but anyone who harms another persons cat would be guilty of criminal damage. All dog owners have a 'duty of care' to ensure their animals are under control even when on your own property.
  24. Try reading this topic: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/121624-pest-control/ There are quite a few training providers out there, but most offer training at central locations. Your best bet is probably Barrettine who are based in Bristol and put some courses on at Bicton College. Experience is as important as training - you can do courses and get qualifications, but it doesn't make you a pest controller.
