  1. speak for your own dogs on your own land, that's what ours need to run around here at the peak of the season
  2. LOL it is not as simple as that ... which is why I asked the question maybe I should rephrase it ... has anyone had a number of running dogs that was just too many to deal with (assuming there was enough quarry to run)?
  3. thankfully we have miles more area to hunt than we could ever do with, it is more likely that we wouldn't have the time to work a larger number of dogs to keep them happy which is a concern. I don't want to be held captive to the dogs but also don't want to be left twiddling our thumbs if a couple are laid up, bitches come in or if we ever decide to breed a litter. Luckily our bitches are just about on the same schedule and break down about once a year at the same time, normally at the end of the summer and we start roading them and they are starting to get fit, they'll all break down one af
  4. she's not too young for walks out, or even light jogging for a bit, but give her another 6 months before you start any decent conditioning with her we road ours on the county roads around our place, the dogs run in front of the vehicle 6 nights a week to get fit starting at 5 miles a night working up to 20 miles a night at peak fitness, 9 mph steady with sprints every couple of miles. I don't like them behind the vehicle in the dark as you can't see if they peel off after something.
  5. this all suprises me a bit, we have had 2 running dogs each for the past couple of seasons and constantly run out of dogs especially when we have visitors here for hunting. We intersperse with terrier work and sightseeing as well so it's not like we are working them day in and day out, and they are very fit, so it is normally due to just wear and tear that they get laid up, rarely do we have any major injuries except for one bitch who is a wreck waiting to happen. Kye's getting a pup and I've been looking for another for myself since my older bitch has lost both canines so she's more limited
  6. you mean 2 for a person, or 2 for a pair of people who both work the dogs?
  7. I'm interested in hearing peoples opinions on how many running dogs is too many for one person (or a pair) to deal with properly? Assuming they are worked hard 8-9 months each year, conditioned well, bitches not bred, all trained adults with no pups/sapplings coming on etc. I know everyone's home life and other animal pursuits that take time away from the running dogs vary, but I'm interested all the same in what youse all think. If you run toothed game it will probably be different than running the other stuff of course too.
  8. if it becomes a regular on the menu you need to feed some fats and veg 2-3 times a week

    dream trip #3 for Kye & I! Mongolia/Kaz. and Oz being #1 & #2
  10. sad to read all of these stories knowing that every single person shafted will not receive their money back, nor their kennels, nor their time wasted.
  11. Just because they fly off doesn't mean they survive
  12. I didn't realize a howling dog was a happy dog? Not having a go, but I'd never heard that one before? We have one howler (SalukiX) and she only does it when she is bored and not worked enough
  13. You should only have to ever give a dog a thrashing once if it's done right Chrissi take a bit of time and spend it with your remaining dogs, in a few months you'll feel more like starting fresh with a pup or sapling.
  14. she looks quite comfy perched on that sand dune!

    sady day today

as said, be there for her but don't hover or coddle her too much or you could smother her. Try to stay in when possible rather than leaving her in by herself all alone.

I grew up in puma country and had horses, I would go out riding 3-5 times a week, for 15 years. I took summer camping trips where we'd be gone for 5-10 days straight both in rural areas with the horses, and at camp sites around lakes. I had 2 friends and the dad and uncle of another friend who worked for the parks departments, the latter 2 had been parks officers for over 20 years in that same area. NONE of them, or me, ever saw one whisker of one, and it was in one of the most densely populated places for puma in the state. Now tracks and scat, yes. But the actual animal, never. And th
  17. if Countrywide bought their stock from Canine, and blamed the length of wait time on ferrying from Belgium, woudn't then Canine ALSO have the same problems (assuming that the transport from Belg. was the true of course)?
  18. hydrogen peroxide attacks healthy tissue as well as bad, which is why it should not be used unless necessary
  19. how long has Canine Kennels been in business, and do the materials come from another country? Some of the problems with Countrywide seems to have been related to ferrying the panels from Belgium?
  20. what a jerk, doing what's right only if he benefits?
