I go through periods of no confidence for some reason. It happens. It's a shame it's now educated but it happens. I've done it, once I think, can't remember......I joke, I've done it loads of times.

.17 HMR Fox- heart or heart shot? Plus ammo.

That's why I don't call places I shoot "perms" or " permissions". It's more of a service or cooperative. I'm doing them a favour and in return I expect a few perks. -

Sure, it is not a trait of the calibre but was particular to his rifle and bullet choice. His rifle turned 60grn game kings into a varmint bullet! For instance, I had a 243 that the rifling was so deep it would compromise any bullet jacket shot through it. It turned 100gn bullets into explosive varmint bullets. I got fed up with it and swapped it. The second rifle with exactly the same loads the same bullets behaved as they should of, controlled expansion. You can have to exactly the same rifle from the same make, any brand and for no apparent reason behave completely differently. The fas -

Good points. My wmr penetrates deep if not right through (most times) but every fox gets a second bullet all the same as fast as I can deliver it! With a hmr I would empty the magazine! -

Seen the same thing D with 22-250. It does happen. What most forget is that these superfast rounds were developed by Americans for shooting prairie dogs at distance and at a time when everything in America was cheap! A dog town may cover hundreds of yards and a day could be spent with non stop shooting them. They are tiny critters and a bullet need not penetrate deeply on them. We get the same bullets but shoot them at fox's, heck some use them on deer! A lot of British shooters only see feet per second, ft/lbs and trajectory gains but completely disregard bullet perfo -
You should bro. I will use my cheapo airgun, my better airgun or my or. Forget paper, shoot shot shell hulls, leaves, tiny pebbles, spinners, anything but paper! I did exactly the same with center fires too.

Never used it mate but understand it to be very flat. When I was younger and had good eyesight we were always looking for targets at range. We would pass on rabbits in the hedge we were stood next to but try for one hundreds of yards away! We would shoot foxes at 300yds at night too. 222,223,243,6.5&308. In reality though it gets bloody expensive! It was great that on one estate the gaffer paid for ammo but when that stopped! Ouch. I had squirreled away thousands of primers and bullets, some powders too but eventually it was used up. I've gone full circle, jus -

I can't find the picture just now but I have a picture of a fox I waited for on dusk. It came and I got it. To my amazement it had a wound not from me but from a short time before by someone else. It's forehead was gashed open, a gash that a small but very fast light bullet would create! The same shot with a bullet of more substance would compromised the skull. I have no proof what caused the wound but I know where my bet would go. That's the issue with 17 cal rifles using less than 25gn bullets. The density of flesh, skin and hair can turn or compromise the bullet it's self to easily wit -

Talking of cheap I use to know an old keeper and he use to buy cheap 223 ammo, Chinese, South American. All fmj but what he would do is grind the tip off the bullet and he did it for years. Then one year he bought a thousand rounds of Radway Green without realising it had a tiny tungsten tip inside the jacket so his grinder set up would not work! He then bought a thousand 55gn noslers and had me pull the RG bullets and seat the noslers in place. He shot them for the rest of his career. They shot around 1" from his heavy barrelled Remington. I dread to think how many foxes that o -

Never seen that either, I have seen rabbits jawed and merely skinned by a 22 but a proper side on head shot I have never seen one bounce. -

I used a 308 on fox for years and 30/30. 110 GRN vmax on top of a full case of h4895 and you can just center them from any angle. It's not overkill, overkill don't really exist bro. Re the chest shot, the only bone there is rib and they are light. Your tiny pill will ruin the lungs and get heavy bleeders. I think that with many folk, especially in the UK a bang flop is the ultimate goal. That's fine but not guaranteed by any calibre. Deer stalkers expect the beast to go on a death run when shot across the chest but on small game it seems to be frowned on! It is quite n -
So you have to shoot standing on one leg? That's amazing, I thought that was only me doing that.

.17 HMR Fox- heart or heart shot? Plus ammo.
Sausagedog replied to Billy_boy_2010's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The angle of the forehead is shallow yes but ideally the soft lead bullet deforms just enough the bust the skull. 40gn beats 17gn always in my book, not saying it's no good but bullet weight on target gets my vote. The 17 across the ribs is going to take the wind out of it quick, quicker than most 22 shots. Most 22 shots cause some lung collapse yes but usually the subsequent flooding has to take effect. They are just as dead though! The main reason I advise against head shots is if you end up with just a busted jaw. The 17 is such a light bullet and fragile. The dense flesh ar -

My advice is don't go for the head, put one across the ribs and it'll go down. Your Bobby hasn't seen my photos I guess re the 22! Never had a 22 bounce of a fox's head or heard of it, that's a new one on me but then again I have only been doing it for thirty years. -
Well I am loving this ammo. It's brilliant, four squirrels from one chestnut tree in a field. All shot off hand at 60yds or so. The 30yd shot at a rabbit clipped a twig but the 125yd rabbit shot fell short so I gave some more hold and got one across its ribs. This is accurate ammo! Nearing the car I happened on some winged vermin just over a brow to me. I aimed at its neck and got it. 80paces. All shots were off hand. Sorting the trigger on this rifle and this ammo has made a great combo. SD.

I wouldn't bother but this little 20g Baikal is a joy to shoot. A good friend gave it to me and last weekend I added 1/4" to the stock and now it fits like a glove. This cock bird screamed out of the hedge at forty yards or so giving me a cracking left to right at speed. The little 20g was up in a flash, swung through and down it come.

Beating stick/stick making
Sausagedog replied to Adam1010's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
Not cut a stick for years but when I pass a hazel I can't help but check them out. I have cut thin hazel wands a few times when I needed a rammer for a muzzleloader in the field.
