  1. Heavy pellets in .22????? Unless you are talking close range rats do not think about using a heavy .22 in a 12ft lb gun, stick to the usual 14-14.5g pellet. The actual pellet will depend on your loading system, barrel manufacturer and to some extent spring or pcp and of course what you are aiming at, try a few to see what you and the gun get on best with. Leaping to heavy pellets, I really rate the Bisley magnum but at 21.4g it is heavy, my gun gets on well with them but, mine is a PCP running at 25ft lb and for the work I do I tend to use Air Arms Field 5.51mm at 16.3g. At the pow
  2. Started the job:- 52 on Wednesday 27 on Thursday 53 on Friday All with the Air Rifle (FAC) Got 93 at home and just taken a pic (the rest went to the staff who grabbed a few each day for the table). I can't put the pic on at home because I don't have the facility (or the Camera) all that stuff is my brothers so I've got to get over to him, hopefully today or tomorrow. Deker

  5. I tend to agree with this, and some firearms regions actually suggest the .243, the world has gone mad! Many Firearms regions are happy to accept rimfires for fox though, probably more variations of tools approved for the fox than any other animal. Deker
  6. As a tool they are brilliant, but as you have not suggested any intended use, or the deal you can get its a bit difficult to answer, also remember the model 85, its new(ish) big brother! There is no doubt Sako make fine tools, and as part of the Beretta empire, the general suggestion must be you can't go far wrong! Deker
  7. If you are talking close range fox, under 100yards as you suggest, the WMR is the winner every time, (frankly, any suggestions by others on this site saying it is not up to the job only leads me to believe they are here for the ride and don't know anything about shooting), it has the weight, speed, variety of ammo and clout to do the job far better that an HMR. If you want to go out further than 100 yards I would tend to suggest you consider almost any of the .22 centrefires (not an HMR), I would probably suggest the 5.56/.223, its flat and fast, has a lot of ammo choices and is relatively
  8. A .22LR sub sonic with a good moderator is very quiet, but it only produces the performance of a .22LR sub sonic of course, and many applications require more than this. We need someone cleverer than me on the physics side to explain the sonic boom which occurs around 1100 ft sec, also where it actually occurs! There are several rounds out there over 4000 ft sec and many over 3000 ft sec, but the boom will vairy as to where it occurs as the gases escaping from the barrel just behind the bullet also play havoc with air flows. Most rounds also go through the sound barrier whilst still
  9. That is the sort of response that is below contempt and will end up screwing every respectful and law abiding shooter in this country!!! Deker
  10. I have 21 permissions and expect to have 1 or 2 more by the end of the year. Yes, I have had some luck, yes I have worked hard, but I have a very high attempt to success rate. Keep trying, offer the landowner something they need, be reliable and respectful, don't take the p***, and don't turn up on his doorstep with a gun and wearing cammo gear!!! I now have a team of shooters who work for me for free because they can't get a shoot but I can. Deker
  11. Guys .....you are way out in your estimates of Wild Boar, in the wild, in this country. The sporting media have suggested for a couple of years that DEFRA's estimate of "less than 5000" in the wild has been an underestimate, DEFRA have now dropped their suggestions implying that even they accept the figure is likely to be more than 5000! Main centres of concentration are Kent and Devon/Cornwall, and mainly due to misguided Animal Rights activists who thought if was unfair to farm the poor little piggies and set them free. They seem to forget that they have no natural predators in the w
  12. Best engineered without any doubt are the THEOBENS, (if we ignore the generally over engineered Weihrauch which also weight a ton) Air Arms make great and very popular tools (just a bit less expensive than theoben) I also rate Air Arms Field and Hunter pellets. Daystate make some good uns but also generally seem heavy and want to put key switches on them these days (which turn off after a few minutes and lead to missed shots...have I missed something here, why do we need to turn a gun on?) ... Oh yes; and do I really need an 80ft lb air rifle, can't help but think a sub sonic .22LR is going
  13. Are you guys 'avin a larf! 100% best shot to stop a bunny in its tracks is straight through the side, heart and lungs, is will simply drop dead on the spot, even with a 12ft lb air rifle. Most FAC rated will go straight through as well when doing this. Smack it in the head and the thing will often leap 3 feet in the air and still be bouncing around by the time you get to him! (even though he is dead). General rule of course, there are always exceptions, both shots will kill, but cut off the circulation and you will kill quicker than cutting off the brainpower of a rabbit. Deke
  14. Ammo is always an immotive subject....if it works for you and you can afford it by all means carry on. Eley, Winchester, CCI etc etc so what!!! Much, although I do admit not all is in the mind! I have tried just about everything and on the .22LR Sub front I have settled on Magtech 40g HP. They work for me and are not exactly expensive, they also work for my lad who shot a 1 penny (the new penny before you ask) 10 shot group at 50 yards with my gun! I have days when I can't miss and days when I can't hit a barn door.....if I have a couple of bad days I always check the zero...almos
  15. Guys/Gals We all seem to be getting carried away with Sound moderators these days......me included...I have them on all my rifles, PCP air rifle, rimfires and centrefires. But the world seems to forget that whilst they are very useful and dramatically reduce the overal noice from my FAC PCP and are great with sub sonic .22LR noboby has found a way to stop the sonic crack. Supersonic ammo will appear quieter to the shooter as the moberator reduces the noise of the cartridge explosion but makes no difference at the point of delivery, ie down the road when the bullet (hopefully) hits it
  16. Thanks for the comments and advice, will be eagerly awaiting the new trap details from Snareman, shooting starts 08.00 on 7.11.07.....I'll keep you posted of progress in the days to come. Deker
  17. good going mate, there seems to be loads this year, the amount we seeing and having so far and yet we still see more when we go to the farms, problem is we rely on my pack to mark any trees and it is hard to spot the squirrels due to the amount of cover still, not done so well with the traps so far but will be putting some out soon, keep at them mate I have only been using this site a couple of months but I am pleased to note that people actually tend to speak the truth! Seldom do I notice wild claims........long may ity continue!!!!!!!! Deker
  18. Cheers, why didn't I think about him, I'll give him a shout! Deker
  19. They are a first class trap, but for setting in trees there are far less expensive options, if you get one of these nicked it's £40 down the drain, is it private or public woodland? Its very public, thats why I can't use ground traps or poison! I plan on using some Fenn 4 built into boxes (in trees) but I would be more than pleased to hear any other suggestions. Areas of the park will be closed to the public on a rolling basis for shooting and the traps are for backup and ongoing control as we only have a 5 day shooting option, the place is swarming with greys, as tame and cock
  20. I know very little about these, can anyone help me with their experiences please? I am specifically thinking about using them set in trees for the grey squirrel. They are not cheap and as I have never used them your views would be gratefully received before I invested in a few. Many thanks Deker

  22. Anyone got a few they no longer require. I could be in the market for between 10-20. Must be No4 not No6. Not bothered if they are genuine Fenn or copies but must be in serviceable condition! Cheers Deker
