  2. Air Gun Ant You will benefit their well being by adding water vessels. As big as you can so they can have a wash. I have a corner bath, two straight baths, a paddling pool and various containers. The baths are suspended and drain into compost heaps. I use a stick with a hook to fish out the plug and use a hose pipe to swill and refill. Watching a duck in a bath is like watching a dog play on a beach. They show their joy.   3. Jimmy, I haven't need to shim mine. It took a bit of zeroing in though. I am only shooting at 20 yards though. I keep looking at the adjustable mounts but 'how much!' runs through my head. I will spend a lot of effort on bodges before I shell out on those.
  4. It wasn't all good news though. My T20 fell off the side of the Photon and vanished into 4 inches of duck shitty mud. I dug it out with a stick and rinsed it in the sink. I think it survived. I was looking at Jimmy's pictures of his set up. Mine is a cheaper non-adjusting mount on the same place. It struggles to get enough grip and just slides off. I am looking at other methods. The inbuilt IR is a bit feeble.

  6. It is certainly a lot harder to use a pistol. I have always struggled, so I leave them alone. There are many occasions when you can't use a rifle and a deft shot with a pistol would be ideal. Like when rats are moving round your feet.
  7. I was on Rat Patrol last night. I didn't want to stay out all night as it was cold enough 9pm till 11pm ( I know, soft lad). The gritter had been round the roads and my experience is that you don't see many rats when it is very cold as they prefer to stay in the warmth. It depends how hungry they get. Anyway. I only saw the one. It was at about 10pm. It ignored my Nutella/veg oil surprise and was looking for the mixed corn duck feed.   8. We are getting better at making it cost effective. I would say we are now on a par with farm shop prices. The big cost is always the feed. You would still need to give them a cereal base, but this can be boosted by fruit and veg. Pigs getting ill is always a risk. I have had poorly pigs each year. They are susceptible to sun stroke/heat exhaustion, even if you give them a big sunscreen and mud hole. The other thing that hits them is eating something that gives them a poorly tummy.   13. Well... Maybe this is a crossover model, or has been made up from other models. The bloke I got it from said the original owner was big in HFT It shoots really well. It has an aluminium trigger which I think spoils it a bit but other than a (too long) adjusting screw that catches my finger, it is really crisp and predictable so I am putting off changing it.
  14. Hello, I bought a nice but worn .177 TX200 some months ago. I am well happy with it but I wondered which version it is. It is housed in a MK3 stock but has a different muzzle. You can ignore the grip as that is a later fit. Can anyone advise? The serial number is 0781?? Thank you

  16. The meat from the first pigs arrived tonight. This was £50 per pig for joints then an additional £30 for the sausages - worked at £1 per pound processed. Plus the £20 slaughterhouse fee, though that includes delivery to my butcher. We are in it for the fun of keeping pigs. The main cost is still the feed. I am hoping to collect 1 tonne bags of blown feed next year and shovel it out into my containers when I get home.

  18. Another 3 went this morning. The feed bill is more manageable now. The remaining 3 are on about half a bag a day. Much better than the 1 1/2 with 9 pigs, plus all the extras of apples and veg patch gluts. Again, the trailer arrived on the morning, apples inside and curious, hungry pigs went in. What will I do if I run out of apples? The weather is pretty bad now, wind and rain every day. The field, despite the extension. is churned up mud. How do those who over-winter outdoors cope?
  19. What would you do with all the squishy, slimy bits? what the guts.?throw them away. Sorry, I was meaning how would you dispose of them. They take up a lot of room. Would they go bagged in your wheelie bin or incinerated in the back yard? There is an obvious market for a mobile slaughterhouse. I think this would be legal but complicated. I have been looking at continental and Australian examples. Regards

  21. First pigs went in last Monday. I had been dreading this as the trailer was only available on the morning they went. As it happened, it was really easy. I gave them short feeds for both meals the day before. On the morning, I led them with a bag of apples and they chased the apples to the back of the trailer. I then shut the gates behind them. Of course, I had forgotten to tag them. So with accomplices throwing apples into the trailer, I was able to enter via the side door. Tagging always looks much harder than it is. Load the pliers.   22. Had a scary moment yesterday. They are getting a bit big. I threw some apples in to divert them, then went in with the feed bucket. As I was pouring wheat pellets into the trough, I was charged from behind and knocked on to the floor. I was then trampled by hungry pigs. They weren't after me, just the trough but I couldn't move till another pig barged through and freed me. I have booked 3 of them in to the abattoir for Monday.

The recent rain has caused a big problem, deep sloppy mud is making it hard to walk around the field. When you are stuck up to your knees and 14 stone giants are sprinting towards you, it can get frightening. So I have extended the run, just by a bit. So I can move the feeding troughs and fill them and move out of the way. They are getting big. These were 5 weeks old when they arrived at the start of March.
