  1. interesting, I have heard from local lads, that there were a few lassie type crosses used 30 or more years ago. I also have seen the borzoi crosses from time to time. Lassie crosses do appear to have saluki in them
  2. From what I have seen in mainland Europe and Russia, the working fox terriers look more like the old smooth fox terriers/Parson Russell types. They seem happy with them and the way they work. A big deep chested fashion model like that pictured would be fairly useless. Fox terriers usually are pretty nasty with other dogs. Neurotic irrational aggression. I think it is a mental illness brought on from inbreeding for show looks only.
  3. Was up at the river today. Not much happening.
  4. Good man for trying something different. I reckon a piney will take the poult before a mink even is in the vicinity. Let us know how you get on.
  5. Hi Skycat, if you have a Lidl nearby, they have "Fine Wholegrain Oats" 1kg bags for 48cent. I usually get a box of 20 bags. I eat porridge every morning and give to the dogs every other day. Preservatives are horrible. I think it is best to eat as close to nature as possible with little or no processing. Right now I am collecting buckets of blackberries and freezing them up. It should save me from buying foreign fruit for a few months.
  6. jf1970, you know how to build one, then please could you describe how you made yours. All advice is welcome, thanks.
  7. Hi Penny, Glad you are enjoying the bike rides. Keep it up. The pups will really benefit from it all. I'm sure the pups are taking after their dad, with not needing much water and not overheating. They sounds like handy lurchers and I look forward to the recent photos of them and hearing their progress over the coming years. When you say 10 miles bike ride, I know your not exaggerating. See if you can push yourself and your dogs even further. At peak fitness during the season, I regularly cycle out with my dogs 8 miles away, chase a few hares, hunt some cover, then bike home again. I'm s
  8. I think what we have here is a naive person, who got a rescue dog from a pound or something, briefly read up about lurchers on wikipedia, then talked to a few local hunters about hunting in the locality, then thinks the rescue dog would somehow be a good hunter. They havent done anything in the field, because if they had, they would know their delusional ideas and beliefs were unrealistic. And now they have somehow got the delusional notion - "my dog needs to kill big game, so I think I will breed it to a pitbull". My advice to you MidnightSun, is to get off the computer, and take your dog
  9. No. But I have seen Leprechauns and they are more than matched by 2 large well hunted weight-pull dogs. Was the cougar shot, fell out of a tree dead or dying, and then the dogs throttled its neck? If so, then a Jack Russell could do that. Do you think we are fools?
  10. Look at what they are breeding in the US! This is supposed to be a pit-bull Look at the British Bulldogs now!. Maybe in a few decades, Pit bulls will look like these poor dogs. And the worst thing is the breeders and owners are completely convinced they are breeding and owning a working breed Poor dogs
  11. Hi everyone I would like to see your whelping box designs, and any pictures or advice ye may have on building them. Preferably a box for an average sized greyhound bitch or medium sized lurcher, thanks.
  12. It's brown with sediment, and well flooded. A few lads using worms behind the boxes. Not much happening yet.
  13. I use a €2 cheap chinky wide nylon collar, with a strong steal ring. Easy to keep clean, and punch new holes for good fitting, very strong, and I mark my phone number on it just in case one of the hounds end up a few miles away lost. I only use the leather greyhound collar when I take my greyhound to a race. It's more for show, because she would look out of place.
  14. Kay, I am very sorry to hear this. In every photo she is so happy. You gave her the best life possible. All I can say is stay happy, remember the love she gave you, and get out with your dogs. She would want you to be out there in the field enjoying life with her pup. And to the shitwaddy, you must be talking from experience then.. eh? I hope you choke on wool , next time you shag a sheep.
  15. Can only be hunted with a permit from NPWS on permission with a licensed rifle of suitable caliber and during daytime. No other method of hunting deer is allowed. It's all there on the NPWS website if you want to have a read of it. Out my way it's fairly difficult to get the land, rifle and permit. Deer cannot be driven by dogs either. Just stalking with rifle.
