are the shedding hybrids exlanas? havent seen many charmoise around, should be easier lambing than a texel and more wool covering on new born lambs than charolais. what exactly is the maternal tup?

Yep they are Exlana mate, good sheep, so far at least. The shedding tup is an easy care, as the exlana tups were a bit pricey for this year lol. I used the Charmoise on the ewe lambs, with the hope that they should come out easy enough, seeing as we're lambing out. Should produce tidy fat lambs as well.

 

Half trained a young collie bitch to go with them as well, which has been fun.

whats the difference between a easycare and an exlana then, size? where did you source them from? you only get that bitch to one day breed your own half x lurchers

I'd say that the Exlana are bigger ewes, and with better conformation, quite how they perform differently we will see, but so far both have impressed me. The Exlana came from the south of England, the Easycare came of a hill locally. The Exlana have also been brutally culled lol.

 

And yep . . . that thought has crossed my mind.

Scanned the sheep the other day, 3 triplets, 25 twins, 12 singles, 3 empty. Going to be busy, mid april, I think.

 

The collies training is coming on well, and she's starting to work sheep, albeit a bit hard at times (so keeping away from the pregnant lot).

 

Also got a batch of pigs to go off to slaughter in the next few weeks, and they are looking great! Should be some really tasty pork and sausages.

Well, thought I would just do a wee update. Things have been ticking a long here nicely. Lambing starts in about a week, with 40 odd ewes in lamb.

 

Also sending off four pigs on Tuesday, with another four going a week or two later and another brace following them. Have been selling a bit, and having great reports, especially from the sausages, which are cracking.

 

I've got duck eggs coming out of my ears lol.

 

I've also been given some more land, and may end up with a good bit more on top, so looks like the sheep will be expanding. Ive done the math, and also enjoy working with them a lot, so looks like next year we may be tupping 100-120, see how that goes and then maybe double it to around 250. . . . seems a bit mad, but we shall see. Beats sitting at a desk.

Have you ever thought about a poly tunnel as a cheaper alternative to you pole barn as you don't need planning permission because there not a permanent fixture and there not to expensive compared to a proper barn. Are them texels out of grey ewes your sheep? What type of tup have you put them to?
