When you lived in that region , were the  people friendly , well educated , etc  , etc . ?

Yes and yes .

My daughter in law is Saudi and has a masters degree from an American University.
My 10 year old grandson is half English , half Saudi and goes to an international school in Saudi and is studying for an international baccalaureate.

My daughter did her complete education in Saudi and the UAE, my son did most of his education in Saudi and the last three years in England at boarding school.
Like anywhere else, there are good and bad, but I never had any problems.

Cheers.

Fair. But who’s ‘they’? The regime? Agree. The family? Totally disagree.

Again, fair but from a western perspective…..fact is, every Muslim is a brother and their first duty is always to Islam.

The Family sits a very poor second to Allah, hence honour killings.

Knowing as we so that there have been Islamic scholars throughout the centuries…..I’d assume the fact they have as many well educated and kind people as anyone else has absolutely no baring on their faith ?
Im sure the executioner in Saudi is a well revered man in his community and a loving parent, still cuts peoples heads off in the name of Islam though.

I suspect these are differences we find very hard to grasp in the modern west ?…..would that be true mate ?

The Gulf States are moving nearer to the west at a fair rate.

When I lived in Saudi, they had the Religious Police who were medieval !

Women couldn’t work, smoke, drive, travel without their husband or fathers permission.

Restaurants were segregated , photography was banned.

In the 20 years since I left, I’ve been back to visit regularly and the changes are enormous .

My daughter in law drives, has her own car and apartment, travels internationally for her job as Accounts manager for a huge company.

There are now cinemas, pop concerts, sporting contests, no segregation of the sexes. There religious police have been disbanded.

Theres still an alcohol ban, but that’s nothing to do with Islam , it was introduced when a Saudi Prince got drunk and killed the king and another shot the British Ambassador !

Thei law is still basically an eye for an eye.

Rape, murder, paedophila and , strangely enough, poisoning a well have a mandatory death  sentence, I’m ok with that 👍

If you are found guilty of robbery three times you get your hand cut off.

I was talking to a Saudi bank owner, very well educated and he couldn’t believe what I told him about illegal immigrants coming in small boats, he said why doesn’t the king not tell the army to shoot them, they are invaders ?

That’s exactly what the Saudis did when hundreds of Somalis tried to cross the Red Sea , it stopped immediately!

Of course some of their laws and customs are completely alien to us, as ours are to them, but they are very family orientated and you won’t see old people being put him homes when they become a burden.

Cheers.

Allah isn’t even part of the equation here, kill someone’s child and they will look to kill you back. Even if they put their god in front of their family. Which a common value shared with most Christian Americans. God, family, country.

Yes they will, but if “they” may have been happy to kill you anyway then who gives a f**k…..you’ve lost nothing !
Like being scared that we breed a “new” generation of terrorists is not a reason not to slaughter the ones we have…..what you gonna do ? Reason with them ?
Jmho of course mate

With regard to law, it seems reasonable to me, to try a man based on his own ethnic, cultural or religious norms.

So for example,  a Pakistani child rapist should be sentenced and punished  under either  his mother country's laws or Shariah law.

Either way he would face the death penalty.
