If digital ID was simply amalgamation of passport, driving license, bus pass, NI number, NHS number, I could probably accept it. But what’s being proposed is you need it to open a bank account, access the National Health, buy, sell or rent a house, access benefits and any other government services. This looks more like controlling the people of the UK, not controlling illegal immigration. Cheers. 16

jukel123 9,612 Posted Thursday at 17:02 Report Share Posted Thursday at 17:02 It's a no from me. Me and my Mrs were on a train Italy. I knew we were supposed to carry our passports but, for security's sake I left them in our hotel room safe. We were hardly a threat to anybody and we were in the EU then ffs. Three half arsed cops, trying to look sinister, with the peaks of their caps worn low, entered the carriage and demanded passports. It wa the like a fifties war film with nazi cops demanding papers. Quite exciting lol. We were in our late sixties at the time so at first I played the forgetful old man card. ( It wasn't difficult). They really put a good show on and pretended to phone their boss, then they went outside the carriage, had a whispered conflab and then re_ entered the carriage looking very grim. They tried to interrogate me. Name etc. So I just stayed stum, offered them my wrists to handcuff me and told them to call the british embassy. Eventually they f****d off. Tin pot arseholes. I don't want to live like that. Imagine nipping out to the shop and being asked for your ID. And it would happen. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.
chartpolski 28,360 Posted Thursday at 17:07 Author Report Share Posted Thursday at 17:07 I’ve got a birth certificate, a driving license, a passport, a bus pass, a NI number, a NHS number, what more do I need to identify myself ? If they insist on this digital ID, why not just give it to immigrants ? I don’t need it. Cheers. 5

Halfhound 387 Posted Thursday at 17:18 Report Share Posted Thursday at 17:18 Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I’m irish and live in Ireland but also have a NI number and claim a UK pension and also own property in the UK but my driving licence and whatever else is all Irish. And I’d bet there’s a sizeable number of people in the same boat as me how do you police that?

At a guess a citizen of Ireland will have to have some type of digital ID whether issued by Ireland or the UK. Who knows ? Cheers.

Some of the best years I had were travelling back and forth on the ferry never any passport just come and go. And when trouble arrived to you just say you were in either of the opposite countries at the time. The world is getting smaller fast
