Black neck once had a nail bed infection after falling asleep with his feet on the back of his neck, him being a contortionist of note

It was the very devil to relieve, but was achieved by dint of copious applications of chewing tobacco, ground glass, and a tincture of Friars Balsam, also a thorough going over with a blow torch when the swimming pool was closed

Perhaps that’s why salukis developed feathered ears and tails to stop the frost bite, I know it gets cold in the desert at night but does it go below zero degrees often ? Also why don’t they cut the ears off sled dogs if that’s the reason, they sleep out in blizzards with no problems, I think the main reason is because Arabs are mental lol

Again I ain't an expert or hunted in the desert 

But we're a warm country to some spots out there spots go -30 out there ears will.get killed off I'm seen kennelled dogs get leathery ears here

When we’re talking about Salukis I’d assume we are talking about ‘hot” deserts like the Middle East, and , in my experience, it never gets that cold. Yes , in parts of Iran, Iraq, Isreal it can get below zero , but the Arabian peninsula, well I’ve never seen or heard of it getting that cold.

People may not realise but there’s “cold” deserts, like the Arctic and other very cold places, anywhere with a rainfall of less than a certain amount is classified as a “desert”.

But for this discussion on Arabs cropping Salukis ears I’m assuming “hot” deserts.

Running dog derivatives, such as the Tazi and the Afghan are from some of these “cold” deserts, but as far as I’m aware, they don’t have cropped ears.

Why the Arabs do it, I don’t know .
