I've always thought that Tidline books provided a great service to us common hunting lads. Reprinting some books that at one time would only be available to those who could afford a 1st edition, even if one could be found for sale in days before tintnet. 2 Quote Link to post

The fact that I do not own the book would suggest that none of the lads from my estate stole it from the library. I believe the lurcher in this postcard is Rebecca. Found it in an art gallery in Bradford and bought on the quiet during a day spent trying to impress a girl who was a LACS supporting art student. Happy days. Did ye gi her 1 1 Quote Link to post

Unfortunately not but later on in the day turned out her far less attractive mate was gagging for it, so not a complete waste of time. And got a nice picture of a lurcher. 2 Quote Link to post

My school library had Rebecca ,am l right thinking she was a pointer cross ? It was a long time ago . The school library also had Of Pedigree Unknown the original mid sixties edition. I did once have the later 70s edition with Drabble's updates but lent it to someone . They must've liked it because l haven't seen it since . Some of Plummer's claimed escapades as related in his Tales of a Rat Hunting Man read suspiciously like reworkings of Drabble's anecdotes . Quote Link to post

If memory serves correctly Rebecca was EBT x greyhound? Very racy for a 1st cross. Quote Link to post

I remember reading it vaguely in the late 70s when it first came out and I thought it read she had foxhound in her and if memory serves me right the owner was around racing horse stables on the south downs. Got quite a few books from Tideline back in the day. 3 Quote Link to post

The edition you read must've been a re-published one because l read it in my school library in the early 70s . I wonder if you'd find many hunting books in school libraries these days! 1 Quote Link to post

Yep, that's the photo from the book, and for me, possibly the best lurcher photo of all time... Quote Link to post

Without digging the book out. I'm pretty sure she was labeled as a Foxhound x Greyhound, but I'd doubt that. Also, in the 80's many of the old boys would say how Plummer borrowed from Drabble, Wadsworth and many other lesser known men. In Liverpool plenty would say Jimmy Keeling wrote Rogues and Running Dogs, sending it to the already published Plummer to give his thoughts. And the rest is history... Plummer's name was mud by many of the old boys. Bill Brightmoor showed me the revolver he chased Plummer off his farm with (not that Bill needed anything in his hands to be scary enough..!) Which is why Bill didn't get a chapter in Fell Terrier. Quote Link to post
