All my dogs have always been decent rabbit dogs, no matter what the cross. Firstly because I believe the definition of a Lurcher should always be decent at that game, and secondly, because I had a great rabbit speck just up the road, so no excuses. Not that I wasn't prepared to travel for my rabbits.

Fawn was probably the very best of them. She came as a giveaway pup, that I really didn't want, but her breeding was more than good enough to keep me feeding her.

Out of a bitch called Ness, who was out of a Minshaw dog called Obo, put to a half bred bull bitch.

Fawn's sire was a predominantly collie bred dog called Sonny, bred out of Plummers Wooly Bear, to a Local 'hard as nails' lurcher bitch. Sonny's claim-to-fame locally was killing a Doberman dog in the middle of a shopping precinct, but he was really a demon fox dog.

Fawn grew to be different than either of her parents, in that she was as soft as shite. Run her on a fox, she would just get behind it and pull up, coming back with her smiley face and a wagging tail. She was lovely and a pleasure to own.

Rabbits and hares were different gravy, she really was mustard, especially on the lamp. She was such a cleaver bitch, knew all the moves, had endless stamina, and made the game easy. I ran her from Dumfries to Dorset and she never put a foot wrong, honest..!! Enough lads in the game seen her run and all were impressed.

She really excelled when I scored a nice bit of 'permission' just outside of Hawick. She discovered Roe deer,  and these became her fave quarry.

I never bred out of her, my full attention had turned to foxes, and it was all about real fox dogs. With her breeding I should of, and it's something I really regret.

This is me and a mate, with a very modest score of rabbits, but it's my fave picture of Fawn. She's got a smile as big as mine...

Cheers Dodger, yes there are still one or two really into their dogs. We steered the club toward the youngsters. Getting them off the streets and into the fields.
