Anyone have any experience of this one or others out there? Any pros/cons? Things to be aware of going down this route?

My neighbour in the marina has one on a 4x4 pick up not sure if it’s a ford or a jap or the make of the tent but I will get some pics and ask the question for you when I return tomorrow
Leo Sayer 3,633
I toyed with the idea of one when they first come out, but decided against it for a few reasons. One is if your on a campsite I couldn't be arsed to fold the tent back up and down again if you want nip out in motor. Secondly if you was just wild camping in laybys, you would just be advertising yourself there, I'd rather be a bit more stealthy and be able to park up any were and not get myther. Thirdly am tight as fcuk and they are way way overpriced for what they actually are a glorified tent on ya roof. What I did was , I have a spare motor a banger I just use for the dogs , mooching and tip runs ect. I removed the back seats and ply lined it and made it lift up so I can keep my window blinds under there. I carpeted it in that nice grey spray on carpet they use in camper conversions and made an extension peace that extends to front passenger seat so you can lie down full length in it. So the whole thing probably cost about £100 to do. And I can kip or cook in back and with DIY blackout blinds fitted no one knows am there and it blends inn. I think the roof tents are just gimmicky myself. But they do look the part though. But will stick with my more practical banger I think.

I think the cost of the roof tents is crazy, the one I was looking at is over 2k, over 3k once you add a few bits. Can get a f***ing caravan for that .

Will your insurance go up as well with that on top …. Just get a tent and put it in the back
Timmy H 512
Had mine for 5 years now, the Tentbox lite, first version. Sleeps 2 easily, been through some rough weather with no problems. I have the annexe bit which is good for storing table, chairs etc and an awning which fits over the rear hatch. I take the ebike on a rack for getting around, Jackery 500 and solar panel for power, bbq and gas rings for cooking. If I go off grid I put a chemical loo in the annexe and a solar shower bag on the roof which just heats up 10 litres of water during the day. 1
