TOMO 27,898
My Mrs is in to the wild swimming...not for me I hate the cold water.... After exercise your best of doing hot water or steam room...especially weightlifting...you want your veins and arturys opening up...vasodialation...cold water and ice closes them down a bit....you want good blood flow to your muscles... But on none training days there are loads of health benefits from cold water and ice

Exactly...makes sense though...if you restrict blood flow directly after traing ...

It also inhibits the inflammation process which is a part of muscle growth, if muscle building is your goal it's probably best to avoid.

THE STIFFMEISTER 16,648
There is a lot of grip and shite spoken about them , personally they are very worthwhile doing , they alleviate heat in your joints , they can ease muscle injuries , when I lost rotation in my ankle , I used ice baths after exertion and that helped with regaining a little mobility back. I also entered recovery phase after exercise quicker and eased cramps ets , Helping to alleviate next day soreness and cramps as oppose to waiting on your body cooling down etc then beginning the process , it was as if the lactic acid etc had been charged outside my body , I don’t know about the true effects of all this as I used compression shorts and a tens machine as well but it certainly helped what I will say that the idea you are recreating the effect of an ice bath with a cold shower is absolutely laughable. It’s like comparing a kids merry go round with a nasa space shuttle launch . If you properly immerse yourself the feeling of removal and into warm clothes is a fantastic thrill . I did a few last year but had facility to carry them out often with packs of ice into a cold bath prior , my skin became utterly translucently clean and I felt much more mobile and capable at work . If nothing else , they help you develop resilience mentally as the first couple aren’t a pleasant experience . a good way to do it is to leave the bath in after a normal one ,leave the water overnight or as long as it takes to go cold and throw a couple of bags from a frozen section in , farm foods do 2 kg packs for a quid I think , get in and slowly build your resistance to them
trigger2 3,252
I've only had cold water baths and that's been after a over 10 mile run. Seems to completely reset the muscles and it's almost as if its wiped the run from your muscle memory. Absolutely no aches or pains after it. 1

I can assure you with just cold water on a hot day after a run it works. Ideally you need someone with you as you get into the bath as it's makes you feel like you want to pass out. You don't want to drown now do you.
