2 very obvious things that stand out with America's Vietnam war is the lack of discipline and motivation of their soldiers. 100% understandable as those poor kids were plucked from civilian life and put into hell. When it comes to war the USA are more akin to Russian than Britain and that is as true now as ever. In WW2 they criticised us for being "too cautious", same in Iraq. Our strength for centuries has been professionalism and punching way above our weight, not chucking men and money at a conflict and seeing who has the most of each. That was never going to defeat the Vietnamese unless they dropped the big bomb and wiped them all out, which they could have done.

There’s book think it’s called steel bonnets Stiff think we’ve both mentioned it before on a book thread

opens up going on about surnames from the debatable lands moving to America pushing the frontier further and further to get away from maybe not rule of laws the right term but freedom and independence from rules and over government I’ve also read somewhere about the mindset of the appalachians being similar to border revievers think that was in outliers book I’ll have to fact check myself on all the above tonight

The grahams of netherby hall were uprooted and f****d off to Ireland and the USA after the border was realigned with many families going on the lamb after the marches were reinforced after the kingdom was greater unified . They settled using the assumed family identity of Maharg , no flies on them lol .

Most families were broke up and they breached off into indistinct clans mainly apart from the armstrongs who stayed where they were and took their medicine  but it never really came . Part of that was that they were a huge influence on the area and the crown in general . They were at their height capable of putting 5 thousand men into battle on horse. They were basically a private army little wonder there family motto is “  I remain unvanquished”

lastly , that extract from the book you used by GMF , my pal is called Bell, he’s a farmer , and on the tiny hamlet next his village is the war memorial with more than 20 of his kin who passed in the world wars and before . There has been people with his name living in that hamlet for more than 400 years. We are back pals again but we never spoke for more than a decade . Sone feat when you consider we live 500 yds apart and have know each other 30 years . He is the most obtuse hard skinned man I’ve ever met and sees it as his moral obligation to be utterly obnoxious to people who have arrived in the town we live in . This is my town he says , what the f**k do they want to live here for ?

sometimes those reiver genes run deep eh
