poxon 5,915
I love a bit of banger racing I don’t race but get to a few meetings a year I’ve got mates and there kids that race in the national hot rods, prod rods and drift rods. We have a lads day out the first meeting a year the heavy metal classic it’s a brilliant day out we always talk of us all building a banger each to race but I don’t think my body would be able to handle the overs bangers but the micro bangers I’d be up for but seems a lot of money to waist just to build a car to bend up. Do love a good walk around the pits to chat with people about there cars and look at what there racing seems like the ztec engine is a good engine in the street bangers and the duratec galaxy engine in the overs some of the guys in the overs are really serious about the racing they’re running purposely built race engines that they just put in every car they race
chartpolski 27,865
My only foray into banger racing was way back when I was an apprentice and a couple of us got hold of a Ford Consul 375. The only car modifications were to remove all the glass and weld up the doors. Burnt the clutch out in the first and only race, and the car was left at the track for the scrap man to take away ! Cheers.

Back then the nissan bluebirds were the in cars , stronger than the sierras , capris were coming to an end very few about cheap .

The pinto engine is a legendary engine mate strong and revs to the moon I’m sure the ford cosworth engine is loosely based off a pinto but with a 16v head and turbo still see a few blue birds at the heavy metal classic god knows were there finding them same as the granadas and cortina’s some of these cars are buggered when they get them they fix em to twist them almost seems a shame but it’s there hobby same as some of these big old jags
Qbgrey 4,267
Had 5 yr of bangers raced Nissan laurels, Toyota crowns, mk 1 and 2 granadas, cortina’s, had great fun, was going down the race engine route even back then, Essex 3 lire v6 lumps race built to 3.1 , with a 2. 5 litre prop and gear box . Went to Ipswich last year still lots of granny’s coming out, loads of merc too

My first car was a rough 63 Humber Sceptre and when l took it for some welding the guy's eyes lit up thinking he could get it off me for banger racing . Apparently they were highly prized in the banger world. He grudgingly fixed it though. A year or so after l'd sold the car we were at a race and there was my old Sceptre ; painted in the welding guy's colours but still sporting the hand painted go- faster flames that l had inflicted on it . Watching "my car" race was exciting . Especially as the end of the afternoon it was the only car still rolling after the demolition derby.
