Hill hunting

Recommended Posts

Morning, taken a step back from quad bikes and hounds - Don’t need the grief anymore. Having moved house my country has changed, curious of those that do hunt the hills with their lurches and a terrier at your heel, how do you bring them on? Getting the right dog for the job is no brainier but what about the training? Thanks.

I would say the first thing, is to Break them to stock the minute you get them, get the dog walking the land in amongst them,so they ignore them and have no interest ,you need them bombproof.( Too me that's the most important thing)...so your arse ain't twitching when they disappear into the distance....get yourself a reliable GPS collar and tracker...and like Mr Bakerboy said earlier, get out there and walk the hills, put the miles in,early morning when it's still dark, late afternoon into darkness, sit and watch, learn the habits of what you want to hunt....👍

It does involve a lot of walking and a lot of the time you don’t get to see much. It’s great to be in the middle of nowhere watching the dogs working the ground out in front of you. Even better when they hit scent and off they go. Neither of my dogs are from ‘hill Lurchers’ but they do alright. If it was the only type of hunting I did then I would look at a more purpose bred type along the lines of GWP or hound X. The only tips I could give is to stock break, get young dogs out with dogs already doing the job, don’t go calling them back every 5 minutes. Let them do their thing. Carry decent kit for being on the hill and a dog first aid kit. Enjoy being out and watching your dogs work.

      **sorry for the double post**
I know I'm probably going to get the piss severely ripped out of me for asking this, but
Has anyone ever successfully trained a deaf lurcher (from two working parents and I own her 4 year old sister who is an awesome little bunny basher.)
Genetically she has potential, but...what do you experts think?
She's not a Double merle by the way, it's extreme piebald/white head. Her vision is perfect
