Yes, not just dogs but birds and all things countryside. He once asked if he could use some photo’s of my dogs in the update of his book “Deerhounds and Deerhound Lurchers “ and I sent him the pics, but the publisher said they were copies and not good enough and needed the originals which I sadly didn’t have. Again, a lurcher man whose dad had non-ped whippets !

Cheers.

Yip, birds infact most animals, an the old ways, he one the very few folk I met that genuinely impressed me, took me out a few times so he could photograph my ole Scottish terrier out ratting, an then come here ferreting, and done a bit of a photo shoot for the country man’s I think it was

A pic of a few dogs owned by London lads in the past. The white bitch was the litter sister to the great grand dam to lucky the dark destroyer i believe. The brindle bitch was a fx saluki greyhound.

No better feeling than bringing a dog on from a pup...giving them a spin at 10/11 month old and  watching it take it's first rabbit/fox/deer etc...no drug comes close Neck😔

I run probably the worst two lurchers in Essex lol saluki bull grey I posted a pick few pages back then got deerhound greyhound x collie greyhound  they do what keeps me happy

Iv met a few dog men in me days but ole Bill is up there with  the best of them, my son spent a few hours in back of motor with him a coulee a times an still talks about it, one of the nicest most knowledgeable country men iv met

Got all of Bill's books on my shelf and he's the sort of chap you could listen to for an age just from reading his books that have no outlandish claims or bullshit in them. It must have been a privilege to be in his company mate.

Just out of interest do you know if he was related to a bloke called Dennis burns from Elgin, he won a comp in Scotland years ago called the Cawdor coursing challenge and then put Caulfield’s Joe to his bitch that won the comp, I travelled up and bought a pup off him, long old drive that was about 17 hour round trip but worth it the pup turned out to be a very good bitch

I'm sure he mentioned a brother . Was the dog you bought out of tor oh dartmoor? That's what I bought 32 year back and I definitely wasn't disappointed either

No mate, I’ve heard of him but never met him .

Deer/Greys we’re very popular here in the north east before the saluki cross came along.
Billy Doherty and his dad bred some great pure and cross deerhounds, (Doxhope), that performed great on hare and roe. My pal bred some top class deerhounds, (Seaton Valley Deerhounds).
I haven’t allways been a “deerhound” man, I’ve had everything from Salukis to beddy types to whippets, even once had a collie cross !
I keep an open mind and as I’m now well into my 70’s I may just end up back with a whippet.

You can have great fun with a lurcher but sadly the days of walking the fields for hours daytime with a coursing dog are gone, the punishments are to Draconian.
I still like a quick “on and off”, but do more lamping now, and the type I keep may not be for every one but they suit me .

Cheers.

you don’t walk the land spread out nowadays chart lol

you creep about tight to edges with ya thermal and binos mate your less obvious then lamping mate

An they wonder why the games f****d. The joys of mobile phones. Ffs. These lads that love to take videos an images to impress c**ts that will throw them under the bus soon as they get caught. Singing like a f***ing canary. Over more than a dozen have been caught. Only 3 lads at first. Then all of a sudden it was 4 , then another 3 then a few more. No love lost in this game.

I've always took the binos...love watching the run up close...it helps at the mo as well when running two together...ones grey and ones black...can be difficult at distance seeing who's doing the work...handy as well for seeing who's about ...

Thermal is a new thing for me...and by heck is it a time saver...

I had night vision over 30 years ago, I bought two Russian sets off some Dhagastani Haji’s . Tried them once out lamping and sold them. I’d rather just go with my lamp.

Same with daytime, just me and the dog.

You lads are paying more for thermals than I pay for a car !
Thermals, range finders, binoculars  ? Just get a gun FFS ! LOL !

Cheers.

I’m only joking mate, if people want all the paraphernalia that’s fine, I’ve never condemned any type of hunting, but I like to be un-encumbered when I’m out day or night , travelling light and not losing a fortunes worth of kit if it comes on top !

Cheers.
