jukel123 9,178
The gas boiler started to sound like a steam engine this morning. I'm pretty sure the plastic pipe connected to the drain from the boiler is the problem. The condensate pipe? Anyway after an hour of pouring hot water on the pipe the boiler is running normally. I've lagged it up on a temporary basis as my DIY shop is sold out of lagging. 1) If I keep the heating on all night will that stop the pipe from freezing again? 2) Can anybody recommend the best lagging to use in the future? I'm with Scottish Gas 'homecare' service and we are 'priority because we are both over 70. They can't come until Sunday. Think I will cancel my monthly payment. It’s a common problem with condensing boilers but even if the pipe freezes the boiler will just trip out until you thaw out the drain off then press the red reset button and away it goes if you leave it running it should stay clear Edited December 15, 2022 by Greyman

Something like armaflex lagging mate obviously the right diameter. A lady across the road had the same problem we used a hair dryer to thaw it out working fine now. jok 3,436
Tuesday saw my boiler blow a wobbler. Kitchen, dining room and conservatory full of condensation. Basically fckd. I guess I am one of the fortunate few who has a niece, qualified as a gas fitter with British Gas. 3.1/2 hours later and being able to locate the part, we were up and running again. I guess this young lady deserves a great Xmas box. By heck though,it makes your bum cheeks go a bit. Jok.
loafer 49
As a temporary fix disconnect the condensing pipe internally under the boiler and run it into a bucket, then reconnect when frost disappears.

My old boiler had a problem which two experienced male plumbers couldn't fathom. I sent for a plumber from British Gas and a young girl about 21 arrived. She diagnosed the problem immediately, it was the heat exchanger. Fitted it the next day. Girl power. The previous two plumbers each sent me a bill which I refused to pay. I argue that if I took my car into a garage and the mechanics couldn't figure out my radiator problem they wouldnt present me with a bill for exploratory work. Anyway in the upshot, they both agreed to forget their bills.
