Spoon lures

Does anyone still make the old spoon lures. Years ago my grandad showed me how to pull big pike out with just a home made spoon lure from a tea spoon an table spoon an back in the day I got good numbers with them. Anyone still using an any pics too put up would be great lads

I think spoon lures are vastly under rated. All the predators round here must be sick and tired of seeing the same latex jig heads going past them. Show them something new like a spoon or blade spinner; Ondex or Voblex. I used to fish the Vienne with an old Voblex I found in the river. I put a new treble on and used it for catfish up to around 25lb.

Remember listening to a local when fishing the river Shannon at Athlone and he was saying the best lure for pike were the home made ones that you describe though i did have a good day with the ondex spinner's.

Brilliant Danny mate a can remember me first using one on what we called the wat -er splash not water " wat-er " Broad Yorkshire this man was get thi sen down to wat-er splash lol. It was a farmers field that had become a wat-er hole with flooding over the years. So he left it for cattle was about 4 5 ft deep but had some monster pike an plenty of silver fish. I caught my first ever pike on there 13lb 2 oz on a table spoon lure. A watched him cut the handle off the spoon for me put a swivel an Ringlet to connect it to the spoon  same at the other side with a treble on an boom was away lol simple but affective. Then he gave me these little white things ment for Salmon fishing with wispy feathers on the end about an inch long an f--k me a was hitting into some good perch an pike with them too. So from then to now a know you don't need fancy lures or plugs to catch big fish boys.

I've made lures from desert spoons and sometimes even caught the odd pike on them before they were inevitably claimed by the Snag Gods.

One thing that became quickly apparent is that they needed to be flattened  a bit with a hammer so they weren't so deeply dished. Otherwise  they either spun like maniacs in the water or had no natural action at all.

These are flounder spoons I made years ago. The top three are 3 inch cut down spoons dimensions taken from an old book I had all about flounders never used then much myself.

The other three two three and a half inch Aluminium and a three inch copper one.

2 bass a few months ago,few jack's,tbh I've not done any real amount of fishing this season with covid shit and changing jobs...get them back out when I'm off over Xmas

Cant say ive used spoons but had plenty of ondex and mepps spinners over the years with red wool tied to them .

Great fun catching jacks and perch on them

There are lots of different shapes, profiles and types of metal  in the spoons on sale at car boots and in the charity shops. I bought one that was a large shallow serving spoon. Very bream like. It is probably still hanging from the tree I nearly caught with it. I had also thought about using fish knife blades to make the Toby style lures that were popular in the 60's and 70's. I have a bench vice and grinder, but haven't got a drill column stand and so find it difficult drilling the thicker utensiles.

My daughter has a  drill on a stand left behind by her ex in her shed.l've had my eye on it for a while. l think it counts as abandoned by now

I bought a set of very cheap copper cutlery a year or so ago just get the spoons. I should've known better.

They've turned out to be copper plated over something that has repelled all attacks by a hand held drill. 

Years ago l made a big brass toby type spoon from a bit of plate that came from the doorstep of our local Woolworths when it was being demolished.

It was at least 7" long and lt caught quite a few pike. Unfortunatly none were much more that twice the length of the lure! 

When l did manage to hook a biggy- certainly 15lbs or more- in the River Arun  ,high banks and floodwater meant the netting process was precarious.  I semi beached the thing on a ledge but just as I thought the pike was mine it gave a toothy grin and shook its head and threw the lure . It wasn't  mine anymore. 

I think it was only about three casts later that l hooked a log and kissed my spoon goodbye

That bit of plate reminds me of when we used to sea fishing. I would go down to one of the local bus dismantlers and buy some chrome tubes. Basically those uprights you used to hang onto on the older buses. Another yard supplied the  lead for melting down and the police vehicle workshops were commandeered after hours to cut the tubes, close one end, fill it with molten lead, close the other end and drill the holes. I can't remember how many of Her Majesty's drill bits we broke. 

On one visit to the bus dismantlers I saw some checker plate sheets. I got one thinking we could cut fish shaped pieces out and make huge Toby type lures. The theoory was good, but trying to cut that stuff with an angle grinder was really difficult. We lacked a powered guillotine. Back to the drawing board.
