I put my back out deadlifting in 2014 , have been very reluctant ever since . you’d be amazed at how many people can’t one rep 150 kg . all that leg strength must be underpinned by proper form and no ego. It was that “put on another 5kg” attitude that f****d me for a year , I still feel it now and even more with my piss tank pulling it over my hips. garbage That's part of the problem mate, your friends/associates egging you you on to lift heavier, big mistake. But, I'll say it again, and have a think about it, conventional squatting is NOT a really safe exercise, for a few reasons, physiologically and kinetically.

I get it but surely the benefits outweighs the negatives . think in 2o : 30 years time , how many people of an age have hip issues , mobility affected etc to the extant of everyday tasks such as getting off the toilet are Herculean. gavingbthat strength must surely negate or at least assist you in being more mobile for longer ... Born Hunter 17,960
Personally I think back squats that don’t involve ego are very good for back health. Assuming no pre existing injuries that is.

Yep, I get you mate. But, look back, you are/were a miltary man. Look at the difference the training you did 20ish years ago, to what they did even just 40 years ago. World of difference, and a lot safer, and just as, or more, productive.
