ryaldinhio 4,136
241 the latest I've just seen pop up. I don't care what anyone says on here or anywhere else. No one has use for 241 rabbits in one lump. They were introduced as a food source. That is enough food for a year!

Born Hunter 17,638
If you can go out and hit triple figure then they probably need it. It doesn't mater what the rabbit meant to the country a thousand years ago, today it's an agricultural pest. Nationally the population has crashed, not because of rifles or nightvision but because of disease. Locally though they are still occurring in numbers to need controlling, evidently. Because of that national crash they seem to be fetching half decent money so of course there is outlets for them. I think 'trophy shots' alone do fieldsports a disservice but I hardly think significant numbers of lads are doing what they enjoy anyway for likes. They may post for likes but they are doing it anyway. For years the lamps have come out as soon as the silage is cut and the barley comes in. Yeah it's frustrating struggling to find your own sport when others are smashing it but that ain't their fault. Farmers want em gone. I personally don't get why lads just go out lamping/night shooting, I'd rather let some other mug do it and be in bed for the most part. A decent dog on the lamp though a spectacle to witness and it does seem fundamentally wrong not getting the sport when lads with rifles are getting heaps. But it ain't, because farmers don't give a f**k about killing rabbits honourably. That's just life in the countryside. I've been there and I decided to roll with the punches rather than get wound up by it.

I don't use thermal or nv just lamp so although I shoot good numbers there is always a breeding stock left. Every year seem to be the same numbers , I am pleased when they get lamp shy as I know I will have some future shooting. Jealousy is a terrible thing , if you dont have rabbits local you need to travel , which is what I did for many years often involving a 200 mile round trip just to shoot / ferret rabbits. Born Hunter 17,638
I dunno about everyone else but I don't think I've ever seen a big bag and thought "wow they must be really good", I usually think "wow they've got some good land". I mean, no disrespect intended but you can only kill what's there and not all kills are equal in the sport they have provided. What I mean is, surely anyone that's done a bit knows that big numbers are a bit meh. Surely we all aspire for volume of sport, not just volume of dead things? Maybe I just get bored easy...
FOXHUNTER 5,020
You can only shoot them if they are there , if you shoot 100 it means theres plenty. If you only shoot 1 then why are you shooting them ?

I'm with you mate... We used to do a solar farm, it was rammed with rabbits, ferret in..bucket loads out ..it ain't rocket science! Lol I love a walk with the dogs and a ferret or 2, may only have 3 or 4 rabbits, but the dogs and ferrets working together is far more reward than 60 rabbits hitting a long net...I've no idea if shooting them with NV is fun, I wouldn't do it as it ain't my job to clear the land completely.. Cracking walk with the dogs at last light on Monday, the little lurcher lifted a hare I hadn't seen and we had a minute or so of running until it made good its escape into head high maize.. Glad to see it escape and a bit more fitness in the big dog... killing is only a small part of hunting for me..
