It says the government are cutting £400m and that could knock onto the police force. I don't believe he has the power to fire police officers, I thought that was Scotland Yard?

 

Did you read Sandymere's link about how they spunked £940m, of public money on vanity projects?

Interesting this... I clicked that little button in the top right corner of the screen, that says 'Search' and in a few seconds it's pulled up this article, from February.

In it, it says that Khan has actually increased funding, for the Met by £27.8m this year taking it to £621.6m. Proposed government cuts want to remove £1bn from the purse and they've already found £600m since 2013. This further £400m is on top of that.

Since 2010, the government has systematically cut police budgets in London. The Home Office is now preparing plans to change the way the overall police budget is divided between different forces across the country, and there is a real risk that they will seek to move police funding away from London and give it to other forces instead. When they considered similar changes in late 2015, the Met stood to lose between £184m and £700m. Ministers are expected to make a decision on the final figure later this year.

In December 2016, the Government set out that Met Police funding next year would be £17.4m lower than in 2015-16, because the previous Mayor, Boris Johnson, cut the police precept last year - the same year as the Mayoral election. This was despite a Government warning that if he did not provide additional funding from council tax, it would result in a future cash cut to police funding.

So cut funding AND increase council tax...

The title of this thread is Khan To Cut 4000 Cops and is very misleading. He hasn't done it and we're not even sure if he can. All we know is that he actually has increased funding for the Met out of the budget. In the article, he's warning that budget cuts could affect the police at a time when they really need them, whilst MP's decide whether he can have the money, or not.

Now I'm the last person that's going to sit here and type something in favour of career bureaucrats and while I have no love for Khan I'm sure that the local authority could be run much more efficiently for less money so that funding can be kept where it's needed. Front line services.

Fair enough but he seems pretty police friendly based on the information at hand. If anything he's trying to alert public attention to the fact that you might be losing police officers in areas where crime is spiking. That seems pretty reasonable to me and I'm sure the citizens of London will calmly and rationally work out a solution.
