How popular is the sport? I watched a gaelic football team take on an aussie rules team when I was in Australia and they beat the aussie at their own game. Really enjoyed it.

Its a very popular sport in Ireland the two Gaelic football All Ireland semi finals were on at the weekend.

One was a replay and I think there was about 60,000 at that on Saturday.

There was 82,000 at the game yesterday.

Not too many sporting events in any country would attract those numbers?

Waterford and Galway play in the All Ireland hurling final in September. Waterford haven't won since 1959 and Galway since 1987. Love nor money won't get you a ticket.

All these players are amateurs and playing for their parish, club and county. Nearly every parish in Ireland would have a GAA club and they would be the life and soul, in communities where you mightn't have anything else but a pub, shop and church.

Ireland used to play Australia in a compromise rules game. There used to be some sledging and fighting in those matches. It wasn't for the meek hearted.

It's massive here......I just can't find words to describe how massive it is.......every other sport is so far down the list compares to it that's its unbelievable.

It's what holds football back here imho, they have some great athletes but but they are all GAA crazy..........every other sporting body doffs it's cap to the GAA.

I coach soccer and it's frustrating as f**k because there is some great young talent but you know that they will end up sitting on a bench somewhere as part of a squad of 30 and never getting used because the local GAA club demands they put them first.

Personally, I don't think it's that great a game......entertaining in an amature sort of way but it's not English semi pro football by a long stretch.

Dublin would be a good side to watch as they have some real aggression which English football players can relate too.
