A Labrador shepherd can be a good guard dog seen a few of this xs and they can be feckers ,but also loyal to family etc.aatb bunnys.

What's your preference of guard dogs,

I'd like one in the future when I move house again for a dog to guard my kennels aswell as the house so the dog must be able to cope with all weathers, be sound with dogs and good with kids, I love gsd's however my mrs is frit of them as she was attacked when she was younger by one, I like akitas my mate had one which would get up every half hour and walk the perimeter of his yard it knew its job it had always been around his mrs and kids etc but one day when I think it was around 6 years old his mrs walked through the door with the food shopping and the dog launched a brutal attack she ended up having to have plastic surgery and alsorts, no doubt about it if that was a kid the dog would of killed him, iv Hurd good stuff about kangals and Tibetan mastiffs too but Hurd they can both be unpredictable? It's finding a balance of a dog that knows it's job but is also 100% good with the family

I saw some lads out wit a gas that was barking the other sides a fence ,they sat on the gate, opened it dog ran out to get them ,they shut the gate,

After 10 minutes of barking to get back in the dog fecked off ,following his nose ,and his me found freedom. Lol

Point is they should be a deterrent but that's it ,if someone wants to get in a yard they will, the bigger the dog the bigger the Shit machine they are

You need to come and see me mate when you want a guard dog il show you some decent stuff for the job genuine stuff not these silly breeds I've known people go for all these exotic breeds and they've ended up with the good old gsd you can't go wrong

I know mate I think I'm just going to end up putting my gum shield on and some gloves n just turn up one of them off you, mrs wouldn't like it but she doesn't like her own shadow

What about a collie x shepherd?

 

If you're not in a rush,probably be healthier than a shepherd too.

If you want a serious protection dog I'd find a good trainer first and go with their recommendation.

you only get all them health problems when you go down the show line of the dogs the shepherd bitch I've got is more to the working side she has good strong back strong legs you can tell the difference mate believe me

I've know quite a few working shepherds suffer with their health too,a friend's import had to be put down last year because of health complications at 8 years old.

 

Crosses are usually healthier in most breeds,I think it's a bit of show blood creeping in.

its just your luck mate I know what your saying i know people who've had shepherd die with health problems at the age of two it's not nice but this can happen in any to be fair although obviously a mungrel type are more robust but then you've got the collie and unfortunately I've known collies to suffer with problems it's just your luck let's face it you get a dog to 10 you've done well

Definitely a bit of luck involved,but if it's got greyhound or collie in it it's usually going to be a very healthy dog imo

 

First crosses too have a bit of hybrid vigour too,that's to blame for the rise of the cocker-poo

collies can be prone to fits I had a collie greyhound bitch as a kid and she used to fit terrible sometimes and a friend of mine lost a good working collie not long back through having a bad fit

i had collies for 22 years.never had a fit

1 bit my nephew,dad and sisters x but not a fit.bit my nephew loads.3 legged ted,got hit by a car .lived till 15.pts because he went deaf.never got artritis even though he only used 1 back leg for 10 years.

well like I said its just bad luck if you get one that has fits I can only go off of what I know if dog in my kennel even snarls at any body in my family I'd reach for the double barrel 12gage a good guard dog should know the difference if it's done right other wise you've got a liability on your hands how many times have we heard of dogs getting out cause 1 they haven't been socialised properly and two people just want them to bite so they tease the shit out of them turn they totally vicious and then they go and bite a young kid or somethin it's a fine line

years ago my old mans mate had his pigeon loft broken into he had a bull terrier there that was a decent guard dog they leaned over the gate and sprayed wd40 in its eye the dog was nackered to say the least they kicked the shit out of it and got in

That's why whenever I get one I'll be seeing your pal because he can show me the ropes, I want it good with everyone until someone steps foot in my yard without my consent I don't want a dog that I'm going to take to the Beach and it's going to nail some kid eating an ice cream, I wouldn't have a hybrid especially collie yes they make decent guard dogs but iv seen them and not only do I think I could shake one off I also don't want abdog that's going to be biting peoples car tires as they pull into the drive

my mate breeds them and he recons if your Gona get a decent one what they cost over here your best going abroad swerve the American and a lot of what's over here unless it's a decent breeder they are a lot of dog to handle and they like a lot of space to roam

I know yeah the dairy farm I worked on when I was 14 had two, both brilliant guard dogs to be fair, they killed no end of foxes in the yard at night, but anyone and I mean anyone that drove into that farm would get there tires bit wether it me tractor, quad bike, pushbike or landrover

In my early twenties I worked as a greenkeeper/pest controller and night watchman on a sat/Sunday night on big old golf course,the owner had 2 ridge backs...I lived there on the job had a little cottage me and my mate shared...at nite we couldn't enter the club house with out Jim the owner until we had given these ridgebacks a jumbo sausage lol from the kitchen-I remember the bitch being real funny with folk no matter how well you knew her....they roamed around free in the day time never bothered anyone but soon as the gates were locked at nite they turned into something else.I was present when some clowns thought they would rob us after a big wedding function...it didn't end well for the 2 lads that got cornered in the office trying to get into the safe...the bitch zena was some tool but food was her down fall..She was poisoned in the end...dirty cnuts.they want your stuff that bad they will find away round it no matter what.atb dc

You will get around any dog one way or another if you want to badly enough.

Having a dog is realistically is to reduce the risks of being targeted by opportunists and as a deterrent IE, making would be thieves look for easier pickings.

I've a thirteen month old boerboel bitch, very switched on and vocal as well as looking the part.

Would she step up if required?, I don't know, and if I don't know neither does the guy looking over my fence, and the majority of people won't chance finding out.
