Any Spearos On Here?

Recommended Posts

A mate of mine has just done all his PADI courses and tests. Only now does he realise that he hasn't got anyone to go out with ! Keeps trying to get me to take it up........

Apart from the fact that nobody really needs to see me in closed-fitting outfits, if I was meant to breathe underwater, I'd have gills !

There is allsorts to go at in the waters around Spain. I have been told the north coast is the best, due to the cold Atlantic currents bringing lots of nutrient rich water up ;)

I have speared octopus, cuttlefish, whiting, bream and some different sorts of rock fish that I don't know what they were. Once I saw a school of snapper and try as I might I couldn't hit the fast ba$tards!I only have ever used an elastic driven hand spear which is the most basic spear you can get but it is loads of fun when there is plenty of fish about. I have also collected abalone, lobsters, sea snails, sea urchin and many other creatures I didn't know and threw back in the sea. I would recommend anybody give it a go. I can swim reasonably well and the better you can swim will only help but you don't have to be an excellent swimmer as you can float around a lot but flippers are a must. I have to say though, the fear of sharks is very real, I saw some dolphins once while swimming, which I initially thought was a huge shark (dolphins are much bigger than I thought when they swim right past you) and I panicked badly, the adrenalin rush drained my energy badly and as I was quite a long way from shore I very nearly didn't make it.

Something similar happened to me (not the dolphins).

I was up north of Barcelona, basically the far North East of Spain. The water currents in this area are strong and notoriously cold for the Med. Swimming along with my flippers, snorkel but no wetsuit. The water was about 3m deep maybe a little more and cold but not deathly. I would have been roughly about 50-60m from the shore when I moved out to the edge of the rocks where the sea floor drops maybe a further 7-8m, instantly the water temp plummeted so quickly it felt like jumping into meltwater. My body reacted - Adrenalin, slight panic etc. By the time I had reached the shore I was completely spent I had to drag myself from the water like a paraplegic. Truly though I was going to die that day.

Another panic one was on one of the main beaches in the city. I swam out to a man made rock dump (beach protection) and when I got to the open water side of it, a huge current shoved me into the rocks which were covered in those spiny urchin type things, fuuck me that hurt and that was a limpy swim back and walk up the beach with a shed load of feckin spines in my leg
