springfield 20
Do people find bigger bred lurcher over 23/24" make better retrievers being stronger to carry rabbits than something around the 19" mark Quote Link to post

trigger2 3,322
ive seen 19" beddy/whippets retrieve 1000s rabbits without a problem. all dogs will steady with there retrieve when really tired mate. i seen a 29" dog not bring the bloody things back at all. he was more than capable mind as he would sometimes run to the other end of the field with them lol 1 Quote Link to post

Phil Lloyd 10,739
It is physically easier for a large dog to carry his rabbits/hares/game birds, than a tiny wee jukel...but,..for the task to be a success,..a dog must want to do it. thefensarefarbutistillgo 2,647
A spaniel can retrieve a rabbit with ease don't think you need a deerhound cross to retrieve a poxy rabbit, unbelievable Quote Link to post

Neal 1,930
Although kelpies rather than lurchers I've found little difference between their ability to retrieve based on the height of mine (which has ranged from a little under 18" to 22"). Rusty once jumped down from the sea wall to pick up a hand dumbbell washed up on the beach and carried it about two miles home. The one thing I have found though is that, whereas each would retrieve when worked on their tod, because they,re usually worked together one acts as the main retriever...no matter who catches it. Since Rusty (my previous retriever) died I,m pleased that Noggin has taken over that role as Scout has a habit of sneaking off and eating all her wood pigeons. Then again maybe she's just peed off after all those years of handing her catches over to Rusty. Quote Link to post

jiggy 3,209
If it's a red stag the bigger dog is better as the antlers don't tend to stick in the ground if they hold it a shoulder height. A ferret could retrieve a rabbit so anything above 4 inches to the shoulder should be ok for rabbits.??? Quote Link to post
