A mother and her two children drowned in the sea after her boyfriend began showing off at the water's edge, an inquest heard yesterday. Jason Johnson admitted "acting the goat", climbing over the seafront railing at Scarborough, North Yorks, during bad weather and down to a ledge below the road. Mr Johnson, 34, from Horsforth, Leeds, and his eight-year-old son Alec were on their first trip away with Mr Johnson's new girlfriend, Kim Barrett, and her children Luke, 11 and Aimee, 13. A wave, which witnesses said was around 30ft high, drenched the group as they stood near the seafront railings and Mr Johnson said the children had laughed at how wet they were. He admitted that he then climbed down on to the ledge but denied shouting "Come on!" at the sea. "I saw Luke running," he said. "He was at the top of the slipway. I just shouted, 'Stop there, Alec, stop.' The wave took Luke. Then I saw Aimee in the water. She must have jumped over to try to save her brother." Mr Johnson, a non-swimmer, said he ran down the slipway and tried to grab Luke while holding a hand rail but could not manage it. "I could hear a little voice shouting back," he said. Miss Barrett, 33, of West Park, Leeds, then ran down the slipway. Mr Johnson told the inquest: "I saw a wave and it hit her. It just hit her into the sea wall. She just wanted to save her children." Nicholas Beaumont, a surfer from Sherburn, North Yorks, who was walking along the waterfront on the North Bay at Scarborough, dived in to try to save the girl. He said: "I grabbed Aimee. She was not far off the wall, crawling, trying to grab it. "I remember holding on to her for a couple of waves. I got washed out a little bit but then washed back again. By then she was gone." Miss Barrett and her son were plucked from the sea by a rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield but were pronounced dead when they arrived at hospital. Aimee's body has never been recovered. Miss Barrett's mother, Norma, asked Mr Johnson, a non-swimmer, whether he felt his jump down on to the ledge on the sea-side of the railings had given Luke a "false sense of confidence". He replied: "Yes, I do." The inquest heard that although nine signs gave warning of the dangers of heavy seas, a life ring which had been replaced three days earlier had been stolen again and another was obscured by building work. Recording a verdict of accidental death on all three victims, Michael Oakley, the coroner, said: "It is clear that the deaths of these two children and their mother was an accident and demonstrate that the power of the sea cannot at any time be ignored." He urged Scarborough council to consider putting a barrier at the top of the slipway. That is the reality of the strength of the sea. To date that little girls body never has been recovered. Two pals of mine are crew members of the Scarborough lifeboat, not only are these people putting their children's lives in danger as well as their own, give a thought for the lifeboat crew who risk their lives every time they get a call out, and they do this voluntary. A tragedy that could have been avoided with common sense. The same thing happens every year on the big tides, when will people learn.

shepp 2,285
How much coast line do we have? We can't barrier all of it to save idiots and idiots in the care of children? Some prick has probably got a life ring from there, hanging on their wall as a souvenir.
