ALL THE TIME, EVERYWHERE WE GO....EVERY TIME WE USE A MOBILE PHONE OR COMPUTER, EVERY TIME WE USE A CASH MACHINE, EVERY TIME WE USE A SUPERMARKET LOYALTY CARD, EVERY TIME ..... The amount of information gathered on us beggars belief. Walk around the average city centre for an hour, and you will be caught on camera over 200 times ! You can't drive in or out of London without your vehicle being monitored - and its estimated that there are around 422,000 other surveillance cameras in London alone - 1 for every 14 people... ! Telecoms companies keep a log of every call you make and every and every website you visit for a year - the government wants to extend this, to include every time you log your computer on, even if you don't do anything on it ! In the US (and allegedly in other countries), if you use everyday applications like Facebook or GMail, your information is gathered by the infamous Prism Programme. Governments always want these powers extended at times of crisis - even if that means creating the crisis themselves, in order to introduce new 'counter-terrorist' measures - "we may have to trade some freedoms for security" and so on. Their stock reply is "if you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to worry about." To which I would say "if I've done nothing wrong, why are you spying on me ?" The only part I'd argue is that while we are monitored all the time, there aren't enough people to wade through the data to do anything with all of it, but we're getting there.
