In fact members of the public can be issued with a permit for concealed carry for personal protection... If the police accept they require one (politicians, ex police, ex prison wardens ect)

Why does it? Do terrorists on the continent where pistols and automatic rifles are often legal use legally held firearms in their terrorist activities?

Reality is that because British citizens do not even remotely routinely carry any weapon for personal defense, attackers do not need firearms to provide force when a blunt object, a blade or a couple of mates will suffice.

It's not the availability of firearms to responsible citizens that stops bad guys using guns in attacks, it's the fact that firearms are not used at all for personal defense so makes acquiring them not worth the bother.

Also, I don't think this has been confirmed as terrorism yet? Just possible/probable as Marham is base to our attack squadrons currently bombing IS.

If everyone shared your gun sense BH it wouldn't be a problem but that's not the case is it.. Organised terror will get it's hands on guns no matter what but as recent times have shown it's the loan wolf's who are doing the damage...this kidnap attempt would have been a very different story if they had been packing.

I don't deny that mate. What I take issue with is the suggestion that the reason these lone wolves don't use firearms is because of our extremely prohibitive gun laws. Obvious with total gun freedom or similar such as in states like the US then legal firearms are more easily acquired by dodgy people but that does not mean our gun laws are right or proven effective. There is significant room for movement towards greater gun liberty without changing this outcome at all. Reality is, that if these lone wolves thought they needed a gun, they would get one and if the easiest way was to steal legally held firearms then even with our current laws a sawn-off stolen shotgun would be ideal.

They don't though. If they did they would more easily acquire an illegal one; how many shipments of scorpions and Kalashnikovs have been busted in the last year alone by UK police?

IMO the single biggest factor in these small fry not using firearms is because there's no need, as we (their targets) do not even so much as carry any weapon for personal protection. And the bigger fish looking to do a mass killing easily get assault weapons and bombs.

Mass killing lone-wolves nowadays just use trucks as we recently saw,to be honest anyone with real genuine malice aforethought who is a little bit inventive or a lateral thinker is spoilt for choice regarding means and methods of offing joe public.
