As some of you know, I am at High Lodge in Suffolk for a weeks holiday and again some of you may know High Lodge is one of the top clay shooting grounds in the UK AND they have installed a sort of HFT layout comprising of 5 stands.

now whilst I was playing with my TX today and swearing a bit at my results, I won't bore you all with the exact details nevertheless behind me about 15yds is one of the clay shooting stands. There were three chaps out for a few hours shooting and they were laughing at me swearing. I turned around and said they should try a springer and see how well they could do, all in good spirit, one of the chaps said I should try with a MANs gun..............a shotgun.

I said that must be dead easy when it spits out 500 pellets which gave them a real laugh, followed by a challenge from one guy who said I could have a go with his gun and he would then show me how to shoot a boys gun.

 

Okay I said, NOT telling him that I had five grands worth of shotgun in the back of my car nor did I tell him that I used to be in the North of England Sporting team nor did I tell him that I have shot clays for over 40 years, nor did I tell him I ran a gun club for years..........................................................................................Well we have to keep something up our sleeves don't we.

 

I walked over to where they were shooting and the guy handed over the gun which I made myself a little uncomfortable with then proceeded to smoke the next 10 clays to their sheer amazement, the guy went on next, 7 kills so now it is my turn to let you try my rifle.

Now I will say again, I am bloody crap with this new TX but within a 30mt range, I am starting to sort it out or I should say I am starting to get to hang of it but as this was an HFT layout, we are iaming at knock down targets. on came the man and I told him how to place the gun in the bench rested position, I cocked and loaded the TX because he couldnt quite manage it although I do still fumble getting the frigging pellet in the barrel, anyway off he went, 10 shots no hits on the 25mt targets, my turn 10 shots, 8 hits.

It all went a little quiet then one by one the other two had a go with the TX and in fairness they got about 6 or 7 hits between them.

 

After we had finished, the grounds supervisor came over on his buggy and as he knew me because my wife and I have been staying and clay shooting there for the past 11 years said to me that we will have sorted the trap layout ready for me tomorrow morning (Trap is a form of clay shooting that I do a great deal, sorry if you already know that).

 

The guys faces were a picture as it slowly dawned on them that they had just been HAD. I told them about my background and we all had a good laugh but it was real fun for a while, I don't know how I kept my face straight.

I too went to my local clay club years ago Rixton gun club on an invite to their open competition. Well they were all there in their + 2`s and fancy shot guns, me, a Jabali side by side non ejector, wellies and a ripped camo jacket

Whilst waiting my turn, "Top Gun" and his mates were looking at me and giggling at my set up,- little did they know - I can shoot a shot gun.

We had 5 shots on each stand, high bird, bolting rabbit, flushed bird etc, etc. The single last shot is designed to test your skill and nerve when the pressure is on.

Anyway to cut a long story short I shot 25 out of 25 and asked "Top Gun" if he would like to use a "proper gun" ?

 

 

His mates were in hysterics and the picture of his face is engrained in my memory for ever.

 

I ended up shooting for Rixton Gun Club.
