The Trip Part 3

Recommended Posts

I hope you are all not getting bored with this, if so i am sure you will let me know.

Saturday night there was a dinner at the convention with presentations and a dance afterwards, we were too late trying to get tickets for the dinner, so we went into town and got some grub and a few beers, [for a change], then went back to the dance and a good night was had by all. The total cost for the convention which included breakfast, entry for two days, dance on both nights etc etc was $7. and kids under 16 was free, could you imagine the fairs and shows here charging that, not a f'ing chance.

Another good thing to see was how many kids were involved in what was going on and alot of them were young lasses, some of them doing demo's on skinning and taking part in the fur handling competitions,

here are few more pics from the event.

I spoke to Alex last night and he said our mate Jordan is a hour away from the fires, so he and his family are ok, until the wind changes. i seem to keep running out of space, so i will carry on later.

After the dance we went back into town, found a strip joint called FANNY'S, sorry lads i was not allowed to take pics, a few secrets i will keep to myself, left ther 3am, up at 6 am, ruff as badgers arse, we had to drop our mate off at the airport,

a fantastic few days. I obviously came back with a few things that i didn't know i needed until i saw them, one of them was a stripper but you use it when your skinning the tails.

HUNTING

Most of the game at this time of year is out of season, apart from Coyote, the Turkey season opened on the day i flew back, seems like a big con to me, they advertise it like hell hoping you will go out and buy all the gear, you have to have done a 2 day training course before you can hunt and then you are only allowed 1 per season, but you can buy another tag to get 1 more, they are big ugly b*****ds.

Coon hunting.

Although the coon season is over and you are not allowed to take them you can still hunt them and tree them with hounds, during the season you tree them and head shoot them with a 22rf, the price of coon hides have dropped from about $40 to around 3 to 4 dollars and there are around a million hides in store at the moment, at the last auctions in North Bay not a single coon hide was sold.

Alex used to have 3 Plott Hounds for hunting Coon and Coyote, but at the moment he is down to one oldish bitch, if you want to see a bit more about them then he still has his old web site up with some better pics than i have, its called Sandersons Plott Hounds.

We had a few nights out with hounds, first night his old bitch had a accident and caught a coon before it made the tree, so i skinned it off, it was the first time i had skinned one, they are greasy buggers and i slipped with the knife and cut my thumb,[usless cnt], only thing was alex was more worried than i was untill he told me 80 percent of them are carrying rabies, oh shit!! glad i had travel insurance, back to Alex's house and out with allsorts of disinfectant, not much sleep that night, then a couple of days later a eye and ear infection, oh sh1t , it must have been the stripper.

Excellent thread,i would loved to have heard those hounds singing, the only place i ever saw raccoons was in the back garden of the inlaws, and a skunk once.I am pleased to read you brought the right sort of stripper back,7 dollars for the entry is ridiculous, thats £3.50 as you said the game fair wouldnt charge that and i bet its not half as much fun,i think your going to make a few people rethink their hols this year and try to getbover there next year,be lucky.

One day when we were in the bush trying to bag a black Squirrel, there are hundreds of the bloody things over there, i wanted to get one and get some pics, and tell everyone round home that i got it over here, but you know how things go, every time i saw one, no gun!!! , any way what i was trying to tell you was, while we were in the bush a plane came circling really low and it was dropping small items, we found out later that they were dropping baits with Rabies vaccines, apparently they did it back in the early 90s and it was very successful.

We had a night out lamping with a lad, [no names mentioned] and his Lurchers, driving around the gravel roads in his customized pickup with the dog boxes on the back, his lurchers are mainly used as catch dogs on Coyote with the hounds, so they are big powerfull animals, there is a lot of what they call Staghound in them and a fair lump of collie which came from Hancock stuff, we ended up catching 6 items of stuff, we saw hundreds of Deer but he keeps his dogs off them.

The last Saturday before i came home we traveled a couple of hours north to have a day with the Toronto and North York hunt club, they are hunted by John Harrison who hunted the Ullswater for a short time, they hunt on horse back mainly for Coyote, we arived half hour early and had a good craic with John and his family as they were getting there horses ready, all the hounds are collared up with trackers so they know where they are, a Coyote can go in a strait line for 20+ miles without even slowing down.

We were fitted up with a radio and a garmin and given a few tips on where to be , i wish i had taken more pics but the day was really exciting and you know how it goes, we kept getting instuctions over the radio " head west to concession 10, go like fck and cut it off " "head south concession whatever " "head here head there " its a good job Alex was driving or we would have been Fcd, we had a couple of good views of Coyote and saw some good hound work, they ended up catching and killing one, we helped John find the last of the hounds at the end of the day, there was plenty to talk about on the drive back to Alex's.
