I worked along the Grand Canal years ago and I remember watching a duck with her brood.

It went from 11 to 2 and the only predator I seen was the pike. I seen no sign of mink, otter or herons.

Mind you, I do know a lad who opened up a heron and found 16 ducklings in it (I seen the photo) but they're were all killed in a pen.

Crows take them Neil. A couple of years back a brood went from fifteen to two overnight and it was crows that did the deed.

I'd well believe it. Friends have twice seen Grey Crows taking Teal (didn't see it myself, but do believe it) so Mallard ducklings wouldn't be a problem.

Seen a few Swifts 2 or 3 days ago and the Martins were a bit late too. Haven't heard a Cuckoo yet though.

Me and my young lad was listening to a cuckoo 3 days ago.while walking the dogs.s.wales.

Swallows have been back in the nest above my back door for around two weeks now ... One of them flew into the utility room but luckily we got to it before the cat did .....

Martins in full nesting mode here. Had about 6 pair on house last year . Old nests full ,wrecked nests that aint been used for years being repaired and even more pairs building new. Don't know how many young got away last year but they were very successful . I take it they breed in there first year? I know Swifts don't breed 1st year or 2. Reckon iv got 12 - 15 pair hard to tell as yet. Going be some shit on my windows.
