Stray/dumped Dogs

Recommended Posts

A stranger drove up our drive in Saturday night and asked if the two Westies running down the lane were ours, which they weren't.

Yesterday morning I found one cowering behind the garage. (Westie, not stranger) It looked really young and had a half-closed eye. I called my neighbour to ask her if she had bought a couple of Westies (she has 3 small yappy dogs anyway) and she said no, but she gave me the number of the local dog warden.

The dog warden told me they didn't collect dogs in our area and to call the police or the RSPCA who would put me through to someone who did. Called the police, got through to another dog warden's answering machine, googled various places and the ones I did call assume dogs only get lost Monday to Friday between 9 and 5.

I tried chucking a rope lead over the dog but it growled at me showing it's 6" teeth . Luckily my neighbour had come over by then, picked the dog up and took it round her house. Her husband went off in search of the other dog. He saw it in a field the other end of the lane but couldn't catch it. She eventually got hold of a dog warden, who kindly said if she drove it the 15 miles to his place, he'd take it off her.

These pups were most probably dumped as they don't belong to anyone round here. One is still at large and probably dead from the cold or hunger by now. How can people do that and how come the "dog wardens" don't do anything to help?

My kids came home with staffy they managed to catch once that was running around for days ... It was full,of mange so was going nowhere my kennels .... Like walshie I phoned every man and his dog and nobody was willing to help ... In the end I took it to the local cop shop and they didn't want to know and claimed that dumping a dog wasn't strictly a crime ... Thanks for that information I said as I looped the bit of rope I was using for a lead of the arm of the bench in the waiting room and walked out .........

Had to deal with a saluki lurcher that had been left after a run last year. The 'owners' didn't try very hard to retrieve it and just drove off in the truck. Trying to get rid of a homeless dog on a Sunday evening is a b*****d, no one wants to know!

There are ethical ways of dealing with unwanted working dogs, just leaving it in the field wet and cold isn't one of them. And no it didn't 'come on top' for them, they left the dog and drove off from a very quiet country lane where me and my brother waited and searched for the owners to return their dog.

It's shit to see people treat their animals so inhumanely. There's no reason why the poor fuckers shouldn't be given a quick death when unwanted.

Try walking the one you have caught near it and see if it comes to you then.

We were walking out dogs around town before and had a collie start following us . I took the dogs home and Mrs put the dog in the boot and went to the police station and was told the police don't do anything with lost dogs anymore as they don't have the time . Our town has 2k people and nothing really happens so the police don't have to do much so I found that a bit rich . Police man says he wasn't sure what to do with the dog so my Mrs went to the vets and they gave her the number of a local lady that kennells dogs for people . She told us it was a working dog because it had some of its teeth clipped.

She also told us to put it all over Facebook but to not describe the dog on there. Just say it was a collie . She had heard of people putting found dogs on Facebook and describing the dog and unscrupulous people turn up claiming it's their dog and taking it . Then later on the real owners turn up and the dogs already gone . God knows what they do with the dog . Make them describe the dog to you to see if they really are the owner . Good luck getting it back to its owners

Neighbour drove it the 15 miles to the people who couldn't be arsed to collect it, so at least one is safe now.

I had my own idea what to do with it before she came over as my pup kept following it out onto the road.

I'm going to take a bag of treats with me and go up the lane to see if I can see the other one.... as soon as I've finished my coffee and walnut cake.

By the time he gets here to collect it, it'll be 12 years old.
