CushtyJook 1,097
I think it's something to do with who ever shoots one on shoot days has to pay 50 quid or something like that or I've heard this bieng used as markers so keepers know where birds are but when I worked with a keeper we never did have them so can't really give much more info

gnipper 6,759
If you only have a couple about it shows where your birds are wandering and if they vanish you know something is taking them.
South hams hunter 8,986
The local estate down here doesnt allow anyone ti shoot them and then does a shoot at the end of the season for the air ambulance. If you miss a white bird it's 400 fine and if you hit it its 200 pound. The birds can then be stuffed aswell.
jacknife 2,005
We used them as a sweep stake and also markers Probably put down 1 for every 50 birds
Gaz_1989 9,539
One of the shoots I go on fine you for shooting a white one. Not sure how many they put down.
sussex 5,803
A few of the big shoots have some whites as marker birds . It gives them a clue as there blanking in drives what sort of numbers there getting in . On our small shoot we supported a chosen charity each year and the white birds were used as a fund raiser , if you had a white bird over you and you shot it , it was a £25 fine , if you shot and missed it was £50 and if you did nothing it was £100 ..raised a few quid each year ...
neil cooney 10,416
Keepers do you use them as markers (hence the reason a good poacher doesn't take a white one) but personally I don't like them. They're usually the first to be taken by the fox or buzzard and lads driving along looking over the hedges will easily see them. Here it's usually a 50 euro fine for shooting one on a shoot day and if I was that keeper who's fine is £200 for shooting one then I'd be releasing hundreds. We've pheasants coming this morning and if there's any whites in it I'll probably tell yer man to keep them.
