Lazy Greeks??

Recommended Posts

While in Greece recently I was taken aback at just how hard the locals were working. There was a guy who cleaned the pool and mantained the complex we were staying in, he never stopped apart from going home for a few hours in the middle of the day. No matter what time you got up he was there with his brush, hose or tinkering with something. I even saw him at 4.30am one morning hard at it. He had a couple of young daughters with him, and they worked just as hard as him. Wasn't just him, they all do it. Bloke behind the bar at the complex was an avid shooter. I got talking to him and him, and he works at the complex from about 1pm up until the place closed which could be 4am+. His wife done the cooking there from about 7am up until he came into work and then she went home to have the kids. On top of this he also runs a small farm with pigs, sheep and chickens and does tiling outside of the main holiday season when he's got spare time.

I watched a few sunrises while I was over there, and even before the sun rose the streets were full of locals with their sweeping brushes cleaning the roads outside their shops and setting up and the beaches were full of blokes with rakes and barrows, picking up litter and making the sand look nice.

Hell these people work hard. Really pisses me off when they're getting slagged off for the mess their economy is in. These people work bloody hard and are getting kicked in the bollocks at every step of the way..

It the news media peddling the government of European line that these people are in a mess because they are lazy........no their not, they are in a mess because they have been taken to the cleaners by the worlds biggest loan sharks ;)

Spot on Wilf. They all wanted expensive cars and things like big TV's they couldn't afford etc, well I didn't see a fecking thing like that. They're all happy enough to ride round on 20 year old scooters. Most of the locals I spoke to didn't even bother watching TV or go on FB..

Lived in greece for a bit when I was 18 and the locals are up and grafting early doors but thats the same in most stupidly hot countries so they beat the heat. In thailand rescently and it was the same as by mid day it was 35 degrees...

Its also worth keeping in mind a lot of these countries dont have the strict building regulations we do meaning the man of the family often has a poorly paid winter even if he is a builder and has work throughout the off season its poorly paid work so the holiday trade is still the main income for many of these people.

Of course mate, but when they got work they work hard and for long hours, that's what I was trying to say. That's probably why their economy is struggling with the euro- their way of life is a million miles from somewhere like Germany where there is steady work of a totally different nature happening 365 days a year. Years ago they probably enjoyed the off season because it gave them a respite, but now when it comes they're worried about being able to afford the basics like food and power.

Ive always enjoyed the Greek Islands best out of all the European destinations I've been to... great people food drink and reasonably priced I've never had a problem there and yes they are definitely grafters..they seem to have a good resilience to what's going of there now.. Best of luck to them I say.

My mum goes to Sidari there every year, we went with her this year. My brother went there last 2 or 3 years back and the barman at the complex we stayed at remembered him by name straight away. Pretty impressive I thought when the place is flat out with people in and out from march to october every year.
