Id try and get a whippet with a touch of collie in it for my next ferreting dog for a change. Around 21 inches would be ideal. i need a quick and obedient dog with a coat for working the coastal areas where their is no cover and even on a good day the wind sand blasts you. Theirs loads of burrows. So the dog has to be sharp and be on them as their bolting or they are gone again. I have a wee 1 yr old beddy whippet just now. Shes a stubborn wee bitch at times. She is doing ok so far considering she doesnt have any dogs to learn from. Takes her job very serious.

I've never had a ferreting dog as such. As that job aint my primary activity i've simply used whatever i've been running at the time... Well, whatever cross, the've all been fecking lurchers!

Funny but the best i owned was my first half cross bull. He was a cracking marker and had good bunny sense, he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. To sum him up, he was an inteligent, steady animal as well as being hard as nails. His suicidal strikes usually ensured a couple of bolters in the bag and all in all it was usually an enjoyable and productive day and for me thats all i needed.

You propper ferreters need a propper animal for the job. I recon if i was thinking about an ideal i'd go for a pastoral brain and a whippets speed...

Never understood a terrier for out an out ferreting? As a marker you could use so many other breeds and types and without the speed... Never got it myself, unless you can only keep sommat terrier size. Yet i've seen so many old pics and film and read in books, of ferreters using only terriers?

I'm running a half bred collie greyhound at the moment she is in her 2nd season, so far so good I've no complaints so far she does everything I've asked. She is about 23inch, in the future I'm planning of putting a strong whippet over her just to put an extra gear into the off spring 547C23F2-FEB9-48B5-8AAA-3C09EF41EDE9_zps cheers Neil b
