Newsboy makes a good point, if 2 dogs are bred for purpose why wouldn't there offspring be as fast if not faster surely it's the purpose the dog is bred for, is what has shaped all the breeds

If we take it right back to the start, the dog was only ever bred for use and to facilitate that each breed evolved into a particular shape and temperament best suited to the job at hand ,

when many of these breeds evolved hundreds of years ago the world was a much smaller place and folks couldn't venture far from home , so you could only really bred from animals in your district so the different breeds developed into what they are today solely on purpose alone ,

Why can't the lurcher keep evolving on its own ?

I have a line bred pup the line has been going for 37 years don't think any pure has been added and there's plenty of speed in them just beddy grey x beddy grey

When we are making statements that a 'pure' needs to be added or we will lose speed, it is worth remembering that the coursing dogs of today have had no pure influence on many of their lines since the

im only making a comment on basic greyhounds my friend .ive trained greyhounds for syndicates etc in the past and kept and worked lurchers for nearly fifty years .ive been known to breed a few decent

You see the same thing in Bandog breeding, if you don't add pure mastiff every few generations the size starts leveling out and you end up with dogs not much bigger than a big bulldog.

The problem with breeding lurcher to lurcher is that people breed from average animals. Compare this to greyhounds; about one in a thousand greyhound dogs will be considered good enough to stand at stud to any amount of bitches and maybe one in a hundred bitches will become broods. This ensures that only the really, really good ones breed and so greyhounds get faster and better at what they do. If lurcher owners were as ruthless in their choices then lurchers would also improve and within a few generations would be a level breed dependent on type. We see something similar in coursing type lurchers today. To be successful in this type of breeding without having to outcross back to a pure then one needs a decent sized gene pool or sooner or later inbreeding can become a problem, and be ready to ensure that like the greyhound breeders, only the very best are used for breeding. By going back to a greyhound, even a flapper, one brings in that really extreme selective genetic s to counter the smaller gene pool and lurcher owner’s tendencies to breed from average animals. With the internet lurcher owners are getting opportunity to find decent lurcher studs from across the country and this may well have a positive impact on future generations.

Just buy a proper bred pup, leave the 2nd rate free flappers alone.

Not all flapping dogs are second rate fella ......

spot on that .most if not all greyhounds these days will have derby winners etc in their pedigrees and every one of em will have enough speed to bend hare
